Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Medgar Evers still searching for first CUNYAC victory of '23-'24 as Cougars overwhelmed by Bearcats

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team lost on Friday evening, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College in a CUNYAC contest by a score of 87-39. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 2-14 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-5 CUNYAC), while Baruch improved to 9-7 overall while staying unblemished in CUNYAC play (5-0).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, freshman Nicholas Guillen scored a team-high eight points while tying for the team-high of six rebounds. Derek Wicker added six points and four boards, and Adrian Budhu contributed four points and six rebounds.

Baruch College used a balanced attack in its victory, as all 15 Bearcats that appeared in the game scored at least one point. Leading the way for Baruch was Devin Nicholson, as he scored a game-high 11 points (5-10 FG). Veteran Jehmehl Fair netted 10 points while snatching five boards, dishing a game-high four assists, and tallying a pair of steals, and Gerard Nicholson finalized his evening with nine points, three steals, and a pair of rebounds. Sayeed Osorio scored eight points, snatched seven boards, and tallied three assists, and Akil Vaughn's 11 rebounds led all players.

The CUNYAC foes engaged in some back-and-forth play in the opening stages of the contest. Medgar Evers took a 3-2 lead on a Derek Wicker converted try, and moments later, with the Cougars trailing 6-3, Wicker nailed another trifecta to deadlock the game at six apiece. The contest was later tied at eight apiece with 16:57 remaining, and the Bearcats would control the remainder of the contest after that.

Baruch went on a 12-0 run over a span of 4:17 to snatch a 20-8 advantage. Five different Bearcats registered a bucket during that spurt. After a Guillen jumper halted Baruch's surge momentarily, the Bearcats then outscored the Cougars 17-2 over the ensuing 7:50 to take a commanding 37-12 edge. The visitors continued to built their lead, eventually going up by 29 (45-16) at the break

The Bearcats, who allowed just six Cougars field goals in the opening half, yielded just seven in the second half in an excellent defensive display. Baruch ballooned its lead up to as many as 51 points before going on to capture the contest by 48 (87-39).

Baruch put on a clinic shooting the basketball, connecting on 32 of its 65 attempts from the floor (49.2 percent), while Medgar Evers finished with a conversion rate of 21.7 percent (13-60). The Bearcats held a sizable 51-39 edge on the glass, while also dishing 17 assists to the Cougars' six. Baruch swiped 13 steals while Medgar Evers finished with five, and the Bearcats won the turnover battle, committing just 11 miscues while the hosts had 23.

The Cougars will now have four days of rest before returning to the court on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will make the short trip to Brooklyn College's West Quad Gymnasium. Start time for the game is scheduled for 7:15pm.
