Despite stellar defensive effort, Cougars get edged by Bearcats in CUNYAC action

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team dropped a CUNYAC match on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 2-0. The contest took place at Flushing Meadows Corona Park (Field No. 8) in Queens, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 2-10-1 on the 2024 campaign (0-3 CUNYAC), while Baruch improved to 3-5-2 (2-0-1 CUNYAC).

Baruch College scored both of its goals within the opening five minutes of the CUNYAC clash. Matt Prusan started the scoring just 73 seconds into the match, blasting home Ammar Ahmedshaker's feed to make it 1-0 Bearcats. Shortly thereafter, 4:59 into the contest, Baruch increased its advantage to a pair of goals when Daniel Fomenko netted a tally (from Arman Celebi).

The Bearcats held a 13-6 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes, peppering a total of five shots on net. Freshman Cougars goalkeeper Clirian Nunez stopped three of those aforementioned five, keeping his team in the match.

In the second session, Medgar Evers' defense played well, not allowing a Bearcats on-goal. On the flip side, the Cougars were able to register three shots on-net, all of which were saved by Baruch goalkeeper Jon Legasa.

The Cougars' best chance to score in the second half came with 5:21 remaining, when veteran Taye Simon was fouled inside the box, drawing a penalty kick. On said kick, Simon's attempt sailed high of the goal. Baruch would eventually hold on to earn a 2-0 shutout victory.

For the match, Baruch held a sizable 23-11 advantage in shots. Bearcats netminder Jon Legasa made two saves, earning the shutout victory in net. Nunez took the loss in net, though he did play well, keeping the Bearcats at bay for most of the afternoon, making a total of eight saves.

Medgar Evers will return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will play another CUNYAC match, battling the Beavers of the City College of New York. The match will take place at York College's Outdoor Athletic Complex, with a start-time of 2:45pm.
