Jean-Pierre and Panagakos tie for team-high 12 points in men's basketball's setback at Valley Forge

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team is still searching for its first victory, as the Cougars suffered a 79-66 defeat to the Patriots of Valley Forge University on Saturday afternoon. The contest took place at the Pit in Phoenixville, PA. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-4 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Patriots improved to 2-2.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, senior Joshua Jean Pierre and newcomer Ryan Panagakos tied for the game-high of 12 points. Jean Pierre also added nine rebounds and a pair of assists, and Panagakos finalized his afternoon with six boards and a pair of steals. Andre Evans Jr. scored 11 points and collected five boards, and Daniel McCollum contributed nine points and six rebounds.

Pacing the Patriots in their victory was Yasir Rowell, as he scored a game-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Dashawn Goodine added 14 points, two boards, and two assists, and Zay Dillingham converted on seven of his eight attempts from the line to finish with 12 points. Finally, it was Christian Renninger scoring 10 points in the victory.

Medgar Evers trailed the contest by just eight, 19-11, with 7:38 remaining in the first half, before Valley Forge finished the session on a 23-13 spurt to take a commanding 42-24 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The Patriots led by as many as 24 points in the opening 20 minutes of action.

The closest the Cougars would draw in the second session was 10 points down, which happened when Panagakos converted on a layup with 1:18 remaining to make it 75-65 in favor of Valley Forge. Medgar Evers failed to converted on any field goals over the remaining 78 seconds of action, as the Patriots went on to win the non-conference affair by 13 (79-66).

Both squads converted on less than 40 percent of their attempts for the afternoon, with Valley Forge earning a 39.7 conversion rate (23-58), and Medgar Evers hitting on just 26 of their 71 shot attempts (36.6 percent). The Cougars dominated the glass, snatching 47 boards compared to the Patriots' 36, but Valley Forge won the turnover battle, committing 25 miscues, while the visitors had 30. The Patriots held a slim 11-10 edge in assists, while also piling 11 steals to the Cougars' seven.

The Cougars will now prepare for an eight-game homestand, starting with this a clash this Thursday with the Cyclones of Centenary University. Start-time for the contest at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 7:00pm.
