Danajah Lawrence registers pair of goals in Cougars' non-conference loss to Cardinals

The Medgar Evers College women's soccer team lost a non-conference match in its home finale on Monday afternoon, falling to the Cardinals of York College by a score of 11-2. The match took place at York College's Soccer Complex in Jamaica, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-11 on the 2024 campaign, while the Cardinals improved to 4-11.

The Cardinals got on the board first when Melanie Guerrero slashed home Brithney Bielma's pass 31 seconds in to give York a 1-0 advantage. 6:11 later, the Cardinals doubled their advantage when Rebecca McKenzie scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.

Medgar Evers got on the board at the 11:35 mark when Danajah Lawrence took the ball the length of the field before slipping a ball home to slice the Cougars deficit to a goal at 2-1.

York scored the next four goals, courtesy of Kresanta Jones (14:20, from Emelin Cajamarca), McKenzie (16:09, from Gena Guillen), Bielma (27:07, from Guillen), and Karyme Martinez (28:55, from Jones) to taking a commanding 6-1 advantage.

The Cougars scored the final goal of the half when Lawrence notched her second of the match, blasting a ball into the top left corner of the net from about 20 yards out to bring Medgar Evers to within 6-2 at 34:13. At the half, York held a four-goal edge.

McKenzie recorded a hat trick with a goal at 48:22. Guerrero added a 52nd-minute goal to make the score 8-2. Tallies by Bielma, Cajamarca, and Guillen capped the scoring for the afternoon.

York dominated Medgar Evers in shots (37-2), shots on-gonal (22-2), and corners (10-0). Seeta Tomby (nine saves) and Liya Workeneh (two saves) played in net for the Cougars, while Michelle Mancuso recorded the victory for York.  

Medgar Evers will return to action this evening, as the Cougars will travel to Joseph F. Fasina Field in New Rochelle, NY to battle Yeshiva University. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
