Andre Evans Jr. scores game-high 17 points, Cougars rally from 13 down to stun Valiants, 65-57

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team pulled off an impressive comeback victory on Sunday afternoon, rallying from a 13-point deficit with 12:15 remaining to defeat the Valiants of Manhattanville University by a score of 65-57. With the victory, the Cougars improved to a mark of 2-7 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Valiants dipped to 4-5.

In the victory for the Cougars, senior guard Andre Evans Jr. scored a game-high 17 points (6-7 FT). He also tied for game-highs of eight rebounds and four assists, while leading all players with four steals. Newcomer Joash Beaton netted 16 points (6-13 FG) while snatching five rebounds and adding a pair of steals, and Trevonne Tcha finalized his evening with seven points. Nicholas Bocharov and Michael Perez contributed six points apiece, and Joshua Jean Pierre, in his final game (graduation), scored five points, snatched eight rebounds, and added three assists.

Despite the loss for Manhattanville University, Andrew Melillo scored a team-best 10 points while adding a pair of rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Jack Scanlon scored nine points while tying for the game-high of eight boards, and John Ranaghan, Andrew Saint-Louis, and Benjamin Merritt scored eight points apiece.

Medgar Evers raced out to an early 7-0 advantage just 2:33 into the contest thanks to a converted triple by Jean Pierre, and consecutive buckets by Ryan Panagakos. The visiting Valiants answered with eight straight, a spurt that that highlighted by Daniel Marinaccio's pair of trifectas, as Manhattanville University grabbed an early 8-7 edge.

The non-conference foes exchanged the lead nine times from there, with Jack Quinn's jumper giving Manhattanville a slim 27-25 advantage with 1:52 remaining in the session. The Valiants eventually took a 30-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Manhattanville University snatched a 13-point lead when Merritt connected on a shot from long range to put the visitors ahead 48-35 with 12:15 to go, but momentum would then shift with Medgar Evers, as the Cougars began their comeback.

Over a period of 5:02, Medgar Evers outscored the Valiants 14-1, tying the game at 49 after Evans Jr. swished a pair of freebees. That aforementioned run featured nine points by Beaton, and another five from Evans Jr. Manhattanville retook the lead, 52-49, when Carlos Urena completed a three-point play, but Medgar Evers answered right back, knotting the contest at 52-all thanks to a Bocharov triple with 6:22 remaining.

Later, with Medgar Evers trailing 54-53, the Cougars would snatch the advantage for good when Evans Jr. sank yet another layup to put the hosts ahead 55-54 with 2:56 left. From that juncture forward, the Cougars outscored the Valiants 10-3, allowing just Manhattanville University field goal the rest of the way as Medgar Evers completed an impressive comeback victory.

The Cougars were the more efficient team shooting the basketball, hitting on 44.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (22-49), while the Valiants earned just a 34.6 percent conversion rate (18-52). Medgar Evers held a slim 32-27 edge on the glass, while also tallying 13 steals to Manhattanville University's nine. The Valiants did register 15 assists to the Cougars' 10, and the Valiants narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 17 miscues, while the hosts finished with 18.

Medgar Evers now has 19 days before before returning to the court for the Dr. Carol V. Decosta/Go 4 the Goal Tournament on Saturday, September 28 at 1:00pm, as Medgar Evers will welcome the College at Old Westbury to the Cougars Cave.

The other game of the tournament taking place that day will feature SUNY Polytechnic against Colby Sawyer, and the consolation and championship games of the tourney will take place the following day (December 29) at 12:00pm and 2:00pm, respectively.
