Men's volleyball slips to 0-2 (0-2 CUNYAC) on 2024 campaign following defeat at CCNY

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team dropped its second consecutive match to begin the 2024 campaign, falling Thursday evening to CUNYAC foe CCNY by scores of 10-25, 16-25, and 16-25. The clash took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Harlem, NY. The Cougars are now 0-2 on the year (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Beavers improved to 4-5 overall (1-2 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Cody Ramsey led the way once again for Medgar Evers, notching a team-best eight kills to go along with six digs. Veteran Isaac Akindipe contributed four kills and five digs, and first-year setter Patrick Mateo recorded a team-high 11 assists.

Pacing CCNY was Prabodh KC, as he registered a match-high 12 kills on 27 attempts. Additionally, he contributed three digs. Alex Abraham notched six kills (6-1-11, .455) while adding four digs, three service aces, and a pair of solo blocks, and Antonio Oliveira-Nurse and Cristian Canela tallied four kills apiece. Finally, it was Edwin Fierros Gaytan piling a match-high 24 assists.

Leading 13-7 in the opening set, the Beavers scored six consecutive points to take a commanding 19-7 advantage. CCNY registered just one kill during that run, courtesy of Gaytan, with four of the six points coming via Cougars attack errors. Medgar Evers tried to battle back, scoring consecutive points via a kill from Louis Caiola, and a service ace from Kayshaun Higgs, but CCNY outscored the Cougars 6-1 for the remainder of the set to win it, 25-10.

Medgar Evers was within striking distance in set number two, trailing just 16-13, before the Beavers went on a 5-0 spurt to increase their edge to eight points, 21-13. Consecutive CCNY kills from Canela and Abraham, as well as attack errors by Ramsey and Higgs, and another kill by Abraham, accounted for the points during that run for the Beavers. CCNY never led by any less than six points for the remainder of the set, capturing it, 25-16.

Leading 18-14 in the third and final set, a 6-0 CCNY run all but put the match away. Medgar Evers, trailing 24-14, fought off match-point twice, courtesy of an Akindipe kill, and an attack error by Noel, but an Akindipe service error finalized the set and the match, giving the Beavers a sweep of their CUNYAC rival.

For the match, CCNY earned a hitting percentage of .194 (28-15-67), while the Cougars hit in the negative (14-23-66, -.136). The Beavers piled 13 service aces compared to two for Medgar Evers, and CCNY also held edges in assists (25-12) and digs (24-16).

Medgar Evers will now have the weekend off before returning to the court on Monday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Morristown, NJ to battle the Saint Elizabeth University Golden Eagles. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
