Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Despite valiant effort, Cougars defeated by Golden Eagles in straight sets Monday evening

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match on Monday evening, falling to the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University in straight sets, by scores of 16-25, 15-25, and 15-25. The match took place at Saint Joseph Hall in Morristown, NJ. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-3 on the 2023-2024 campaign, while the Eagles improved to a mark of 4-13.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was paced by veteran Cody Ramsey, as he registered a team-high five kills to go along with four digs and a team-high two service aces. Sophomore Carlos Abreu added three kills, a team-high six digs, and a pair of assists, and Isaac Akindipe finalized his evening with three kills and four digs. Finally, it was freshman setter Patrick Matteo piling a team-high 11 assists.

Saint Elizabeth University's Kennedy Ibezim led all players with seven kills, and his four service aces were also a match-high. He also contributed three digs, as well. Kyzier Kelly finished with six kills, four digs, and a pair of assists, and Sam Lugo, Enock Joachim, and Eusebio Veras registered four kills apiece. Finally, it was Alberto Torres Vidal contributing a match-high 15 assists on the evening.

In the opening set, Medgar Evers held early advantages of 4-1 and 5-2, before four consecutive points by the Golden Eagles gave Saint Elizabeth University a 6-5 advantage. The teams would exchange the lead four more times, with the final pendulum swing coming when the Golden Eagles answered a 9-8 deficit by rattling off five straight points to snatch a 13-11 advantage. A Veras kill and four Cougars errors accounted for the Saint Elizabeth University points during that aforementioned run.

Medgar Evers scored three of the next four points to stay within striking distance, trailing just 14-12, but the Golden Eagles outscored the visitors 11-4 the rest of the way to capture set one, 25-16.

The Cougars held a slim 5-4 edge in the opening stages of the second set, but Saint Elizabeth University quickly changed the momentum, scoring 11 of the next 12 points to take a commanding 15-6 lead. The Golden Eagles later held a 16-7 lead, before Medgar Evers scored three straight points to keep things close, with two of the final three points during that string coming via kills by Akindipe and Ramsey.
Later, Saint Elizabeth University held a 20-14 lead before finishing the set strong, outscoring Medgar Evers 5-1 to snatch the second set, 25-15.

In a mostly-competitive third set, Medgar Evers trailed the hosts 17-11 before scoring four consecutive points to inch to within two. Mateo registered a kill, and following that were attack errors by the Golden Eagles' Eddie Pena and Kelly, as well as a ball-handling error by Brad Mahoney. Saint Elizabeth University would turn up the voltage from there, though, scoring the final eight points of the set to win it, 25-15, and essentially win the match.

The Golden Eagles hit .296 on the evening (32-11-71), while the Cougars hit in the negative (15-16-62, -.016). Saint Elizabeth University held a 10-3 edge in service aces, while also holding a slim 26-23 edge in digs.
