Cougars battle, but Ultimately drop CUNYAC contest to John Jay College in three sets

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match at the Cougars Cave last night, falling to conference foe John Jay College in straight sets, by scores of 13-25, 16-25, and 21-25. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to a mark of 0-4 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-3 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds continued their hot start, improving to 10-4 overall, and 4-1 in conference competition.

Cody Ramsey once again led the way for Medgar Evers, as he registered a team-high eight kills, hitting .179 in the process (8-3-28). He also added six digs, a pair of assists, and a service ace, as well. Carlos Abreu finished with four kills, a match-high 13 digs, and six assists, and Jerome Hodges and Louis Caiola finished with two kills apiece. Finally, it was setter Patrick Mateo recording a team-best seven assists.

John Jay College was paced by Stephen Daly, as he finished with five kills to go along with three digs. Jeferson Avila-Macancela contributed four kills, a match-high five service aces, five digs, and a pair of block assists, and Logan Ramos finalized his evening with four kills (4-0-7, .571), a match-high 10 assists, and six digs. Kyle Barriffe-Johnson added four kills, and it was Alex Bridgelall registering nine assists and three service aces.

Trailing 2-1 in the opening set, Medgar Evers took advantage of four consecutive Bloodhounds errors before Ramsey registered a kill, as the Cougars took a 6-2 advantage. John Jay then responded with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a kill and a block assist by Avila-Macancela, as the Bloodhounds snatched a 9-6 edge. Later, with John Jay holding on to a 10-9 lead, the Bloodhounds put together another 7-0 spurt to take a commanding 17-9 advantage. Macancela registered a kill and three service aces during that run, with Steven Ajazi also contributing a kill. After the CUNYAC foes split the next eight points, John Jay scored the final four to wrap up the first set, winning it 25-13.

Bridglall registered three service aces in the early stages of the second set, as the Bloodhounds raced out to a 5-0 edge. Despite struggling with its hitting percentage through set number two, John Jay College managed to keep its lead throughout the duration of the set. A solo block by Jaden LaMarre and later, a kill, earned the Bloodhounds a double-digit advantage, leading 18-9 at the end of that run. John Jay eventually captured the second set 25-16, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in sets.

In the third set, John Jay held a 20-13 edge, but Medgar Evers refused to go quietly, rattling off three consecutive points to pull to within four, 20-16. Two consecutive Bloodhound errors, compiled with a kill by Hodges, accounted for the points during that run for the Cougars. A kill by Daly stopped the bleeding for the visitors, as John Jay then led 21-16, but another 3-0 run by Medgar Evers, capped by a kill by Ramsey, inched the hosts to within two, 21-19.

After the teams split the next four points, John Jay College registered the victory, as Barriffe-Johnson notched two consecutive kills to earn the victory for the Bloodhounds in the set, 25-21, and essentially, the match, 3-0.

John Jay hit .222 for the evening (25-11-63), while Medgar Evers earned a hitting percentage of .015 (17-16-68). The Bloodhounds held a 10-4 edge in service aces, while also earning 11 Blocks to the Cougars' six. John Jay piled 30 digs compared to 24 for the hosts, and the Bloodhounds held a 23-15 advantage in assists.

Medgar Evers will look to get in the win column this Thursday evening, as the Cougars stay home to battle CUNYAC foe York College. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 7:00pm.
