Men's volleyball fails to capitalize on fast start, falls to York College in four sets in CUNYAC clash

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team lost its fifth consecutive match to begin the 2024 campaign, Thursday falling to CUNYAC foe York College in four sets by scores of 25-19, 15-25, 18-25, and 18-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. While the Cougars are now 0-5 on the year (0-4 CUNYAC), the Cardinals were able to register their first victory, improving to 1-9 on the 2024 season (1-5 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Cody Ramsey led the way for the hosts with a team-high 13 kills, hitting .171 in the process. He also led all Cougars with 10 digs, while also adding two service aces. Isaac Akindpe and Louis Caiola contributed six kills apiece. Akindipe notched six kills, with Caiola finishing with five. Carlos Abreu finished with team-highs of 22 assists and four service aces to go along with eight digs and three kills, and Patrick Mateo finalized his evening with five assists.

York College's David Heyliger Jr. piled a match-high 17 kills, hitting .306 on the evening. He also led all players with 12 digs, while registering a pair of service aces. Alexis Ramirez finished with 15 kills and six digs, and Glenver Stuart hit 1.000 on the evening (5-0-5) with his five kills. Stanley Sanchez finalized his evening with a match-high 27 assists, and Ahmed Algendy recorded nine digs.

In the opening set, kills by Ramsey, Caiola, and Akindipe helped the Cougars race to an early 11-4 advantage. The Cardinals answered with a 6-1 run, highlighted by three kills from Heyliger Jr., to inch the visitors to within four points, 16-12. Medgar Evers, thanks to a pair of kills by Ramsey and one apiece by Akindipe and Mateo, went on an 8-3 spurt to snatch a commanding 24-15 advantage. The pendulum then swung the Cardinals' way, as York fought off set-point four times, pulling to within five, 24-19. The set then wrapped when Ramirez committed a service error, as the Cougars claimed victory, 25-19.

York College turned up the voltage in the second set, earning an incredible .550 hitting percentage, registering 13 kills on just 20 attempts. The Cardinals, following a slow start that doomed them in set number one, took control of set two early, racing out to a 5-0 edge behind kills from Heyliger Jr., Sanchez, and Stuart. Marvin Mondesir used two service aces to increase York's advantage to eight points, 12-4.

The Cardinals later held a seemingly-comfortable 21-9 edge in the set, but Medgar Evers refused to go quietly, scoring six of the next eight points to pull to within eight, 23-15. Ramsey, Akindipe, and Mateo registered a kill apiece during that aforementioned run. York College then ended any hope of a Medgar Evers comeback in the second set, scoring the final two points via a Heyliger Jr. kill, and a Caiola attack error, to within it, 25-15.

Following a seesaw battle in the opening stages of the third set, Akindipe squared things at six apiece with a kill. York College then used a 5-0 spurt, highlighted by a pair of aces from Ramirez, to catapult ahead, 11-6. Later, trailing 17-14, three consecutive attack errors by the hosts gave York a commanding 20-14 advantage. The Cougars stayed close thanks to a Caiola kill and a pair of Cardinals errors, inching to within three at 20-17, but York closed the set strong, winning five of the final six points to earn a victory in set three, 25-18.

With things knotted at seven in the fourth set, the Cardinals went on a dominating 9-2 spurt to take a 16-9 advantage. Later, with Medgar Evers staring down a CUNYAC defeat, down 20-12, the Cougars rattled off four straight points during a dominant stretch from Abreu that saw him record three aces and a kill. Just as they did in the third set, though, York earned five of the set's final six points to win it, 25-18, and take the match, 3-1.

York College was far more efficient with its hitting on the evening, earning a percentage of .272 on the evening (40-15-92). Medgar Evers hit .069 on the night (31-24-101). The Cardinals held a 38-28 edge in assists, while also piling 40 digs compared to 33 for the hosts. The visitors also held a slim 13-10 advantage in service aces.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will host CCNY in another CUNYAC match. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 1:30pm.
