Cougars drop CUNYAC match to Beavers in straight sets in Saturday matinee

Box Score The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Beavers of CCNY by scores of 0-25 (forfeited set), 15-20, and 20-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-6 on the 2024 campaign (0-5 CUNYAC), while the Beavers improved to 6-8 overall (3-5 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Cody Ramsey led the way for his squad tying for the match-high of four kills to go along with six digs, a pair of service aces, and two assists. Carlos Abreu finalized his afternoon with three kills and a match-high 11 digs, and freshman setter Patrick Mateo added a team-best seven assists.

For CCNY, Brandon Green and Prabodh KC tied for the match-high of four kills, and both players also contributed five digs apiece. Alex Abraham finalized his afternoon with three kills and four digs, and David Galvez Reyes piled a match-high 14 assists. Finally, it was Antonio Oliveira-Nurse registering a team-best six digs.

After the Cougars forfeited the opening set, CCNY raced out to a 8-6 advantage in the second set, before rattling off four consecutive points to take a 12-6 edge. An attack error by Isaac Akindipe, an ace by Cristian Canela, and kills by Abraham and Green accounted for the points during that aforementioned run.

Later, the Beavers held a 17-12 advantage, before scoring seven straight points to take a commanding 24-12 lead. Medgar Evers fought off match-point three times, as Abreu registered a pair of kills, and Green committed an attack error. That brought the hosts to within nine, at 24-15. CCNY then clinched the set when Canela recorded a kill, giving the Beavers a 25-15 win, and a 2-0 advantage in sets.

Trailing 6-3 in the third set, Medgar Evers put together a ferocious 5-0 spurt to catapult ahead by a score of 8-6. Abreu notched a kill during the run, with Ramsey registering two service aces. Later in the set, with the Cougars holding a slim 10-9 edge, CCNY scored five straight points thanks to five straight Medgar Evers attack errors, to go up 14-10.

Later, the Beavers led by 19-13, but a pair of kills by Ramsey, paired with an attack error by Green, brought the Cougars to within three, 19-16. After splitting the next four points, CCNY led 21-18, and finished off the victory by registering four of the final six points of the CUNYAC clash.

For the afternoon, CCNY finished with a hitting percentage of .160 (17-9-50), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative (10-20-55, -.182). The Beavers also held slim edges in digs (25-23) and service aces (5-4), while also piling 16 assists compared to the Cougars' 10.

Medgar Evers will look to solidify its first victory of the 2024 campaign on Tuesday, as the Cougars will host Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 6:30pm.
