Men's volleyball defeated by NJCU in straight sets in home finale; Seniors Chrisnel Nicolas, Ahmed Toure honored prior to match

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped its home finale on Thursday evening, falling to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University in straight sets, by scores of 7-25, 5-25, and 9-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-16 on the 2026 campaign (0-7 CUNYAC), while the Gothic Knights improved to 18-7, and finished an unblemished 8-0 in conference play.

Prior to the match, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics took some time to honor seniors Chrisnel Nicolas and Ahmed Toure, saluting them for their service to the men's volleyball program.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, freshman Christian Olowabi and Toure tied for the team-high of three kills. Owolabi's five digs were also a team-high, and Toure contributed four digs, a match-high two block assists, and a team-high two assists.

NJCU was paced by Mikey Harte's match-high 13 kills (13-2-19, .579), while Alaittim De Leon added 12 kills while hitting a blistering .786 for the evening.  Faraz Bhatti dished out a match-high assists while leading all players with 9 service aces. Jonathan Mundaray's 11 digs were a match-high.

The Gothic Knights raced out to a commanding 8-0 advantage, highlighted by a pair of aces from Bhatti. The Cougars registered their first point of the set thanks to an error by the visitors. Mike McGehee later recorded consecutive kills, highlighting a 5-0 run for NJCU that pushed bumped its edge to 18-3. The Gothic Knights scored seven of the ensuing 11 points to capture the set, with De Leon recording a pair of kills during that aforementioned, set-securing surge.

NJCU rattled off 10 consecutive points to open set number two, and later used another 10-0 run to snatch a commanding 20-1 advantage. Medgar Evers then momentarily snatched momentum from the visitors, scoring four of the next five points (courtesy of a Nicolas kill, a service ace by Toure, and a pair of NJCU attack errors) to pull to within 16 (21-5), however, the Gothic Knights closed out he set with a kill apiece by Harte and Johan Vaidyan, along with a setting error by Ahmed, and an attack error by Kimahli Reid.

Medgar Evers tied the third set at three on a kill by Reid, before NJCU responded with a 7-1 charge to take a 10-4 advantage. The Gothic Knights scored 15 of the ensuing 20 points to capture the set, and the match. Paige led the way for NJCU during that final run, registering three kills.

The Gothic Knights earned a hitting percentage of .447 for the night (46-12-76) while notching 44 assists, earning nine service aces, and compiling 43 digs. Medgar Evers hit in the negative (8-14-68, -.088), recording six assists, one service ace, and 16 digs.

On the slate next for the Cougars will be a trip to Baruch College's ARC Arena on Tuesday, as Medgar Evers will wrap up CUNYAC play against the Bearcats. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
