Men's volleyball drops consecutive matches to CUNYAC foe Brooklyn College Tuesday evening at Cougars Cave

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Tuesday evening, falling to CUNYAC and borough foe Brooklyn College twice in straight sets. In the first clash of the evening (the conference match), the Cougars were defeated by the Bulldogs by scores of 9-25, 14-25, and 14-25. In the non-CUNYAC nightcap, Medgar Evers fell to Brooklyn by scores of 13-25, 9-25, and 16-25. With that aforementioned output, the Cougars are now 0-15 on the 2026 campaign (0-6 CUNYAC), while the Bulldogs improved to 11-6 (3-4 CUNYAC).

Match 1 of Doubleheader (CUNYAC)

In the opening match of the evening, the Cougars were paced by freshman Christian Owolabi, as he registered team-bests of three kills and seven digs. He also contributed a pair of assists, as well. Ahmed Toure notched a pair of kills to go along with six digs, a match-high two solo blocks, a block assist, and a service ace, and Shabbir Ahmed added two kills (2-0-3, .667) and three digs.

For the Bulldogs, Gabriel Minchala led the way with seven kills (7-2-11, .455) and four service aces, while Matthew Kadatskiy and Tylar Pina added six and five kills, respectively. Miguel Trejo posted a match-high 17 assists while recording four service aces.

Brooklyn raced out to leads of 4-0, 10-1, and 20-5 in the opening set, with Aaron Siu recording three kills during that opening charge for the visitors, and Kadatskiy registering four service aces. Medgar Evers inched to within 11 (20-9) courtesy of a pair of attack errors, a service error, and a bad set by the Bulldogs, but Brooklyn finished off the set by rattling off five consecutive points, the latter two coming via a kill apiece by Gabriel Minchala and Kadatskiy. The Bulldogs won set one, 25-9.

The visitors held a 4-1 edge in the second set, before the Cougars used three Bulldogs errors to knot the set at
four apiece. Brooklyn later held a 12-6 advantage, before the Cougars scored three consecutive points, capped by an Ahmed kill to pull to within three, 12-9. Medgar Evers drew as close as just two points down (13-11), before Brooklyn used a 12-3 push to finalize and win the set, 25-14. Of those 12 points for the Bulldogs, two came courtesy of kills by Kadataskiy, with Lior Amoromin contributing a pair of service aces during the spurt.

Trailing 2-1 in the third set, Medgar Evers went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by four Brooklyn errors, and a kill by Ahmed, as the Cougars snatched a 6-2 advantage. The Bulldogs scored eight of the ensuing 10 points to snatch a 10-8 edge, before Owolabi slammed home a kill to inch his team to within a point (10-9). Brooklyn then used another 8-2 run (highlighted by an ace from Siu, and a kill apiece by Amromin, Minchala, and Jiaian Flanders) to bump to an 18-11 edge.

With things looking bleak for Medgar Evers, Owolabi notched consecutive kills to get the Cougars to within five, 18-13. Brooklyn would finish strong, though, outscoring Medgar Evers 7-1 the rest of the way to win the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-0. Minchala collected two aces during that winning run, with Donovan De La Rosa and Tyler Pina recording one kill each.

Brooklyn College hit .239 for the match (31-15-67) while recording 26 assists, 21 service aces, and 28 digs. On the flip side, the Cougars hit -.080 (8-12-50), collecting seven assists, recording two service aces, and adding 19 digs.

Match 2 of Doubleheader (Non-CUNYAC)

In the second match of the evening, Owolabi recorded team-bests of three kills and six digs, while tying for the team-high of two service aces. Toure contributed two kills and two assists, and veteran Kimahli Reid added two service aces, five digs, and a kill.

Leading the offensive charge was Kadatskiy, as he recorded a match-high 10 kills while adding six service aces for a total of 16 points. Siu was also excellent for the visitors, notching nine kills on a .727 hitting percentage along with three aces. Minchala contributed eight kills while hitting .700 for the evening, and Trejo facilitated the hitting attack with a match-best 22 assists to go along with solid play at the service line (three aces).

The opening set of match two featured seesaw action in the early stages, with the lead changing hands four times, the latter of those pendulum swings coming when Trejo's service ace gave Brooklyn a 10-9 advantage. The Bulldogs never trailed in the set again, scoring 15 of the final 19 points to win it, 25-13. Brooklyn's attack was very balanced during that push, with Minchala recording four kills, Kadatskiy adding three, and Siu contributing two.

The Bulldogs dominated the second set, putting together a hitting percentage of .688 to win it by 16, 25-9. Brooklyn recorded 12 kills in the second, with Siu (seven) and De La Rosa (three) accounting for most of those. Siu also made his presence felt at the service line, as the standout collected three aces for the set.

Medgar Evers trailed 7-3 in the third set, and following a service error by the Bulldogs, Sunny Nguyen, Reid notched consecutive service aces for the hosts, as the Cougars pulled to within one, 7-6. Brooklyn never relinquished the lead despite Medgar Evers staying within striking distance, as an Owolabi kill later brought the Cougars to within four, 15-11. The Bulldogs finished the set and match with a 10-4 run that featured five kills, including two by Kadatskiy, and one apiece by De La Rosa, Ali Zandani, and Flanders.

Brooklyn hit .493 for the match (40-7-67) while notching 38 assists, serving up 17 aces, and tallying 25 digs. The Cougars hit in the negative (8-10-43, -.047), finalizing match two with seven assists, five service aces, and 20 digs.
