Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball drops home contest to Brooklyn, suffers doubleheader sweep at Hunter

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped three CUNYAC matches in recent days. This past Tuesday, the Cougars fall to the Bulldogs at the Cougars Cave by scores of 22-25, 17-25, and 20-25. Then, earlier this evening, the Cougars were swept in a doubleheader at Hunter College with the Hawks winning the first match 25-12, 25-16, 25-20, and the second contest, 6-25, 11-25, and 15-25.

With that aforementioned output, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-9 (0-8 CUNYAC) on the 2024 campaign. Brooklyn College improved to 7-10 (3-4 CUNYAC), and Hunter College pushed over the .500 mark with their two victories, moving to 9-8 on the year, and an impressive 7-1 mark in conference action.

Despite the Cougars' loss to Brooklyn, Cody Ramsey once again led the charge for Medgar Evers, tying for the match-high of 15 kills, while also registering three digs and a pair of service aces. Carlos Abreu finalized his evening with seven kills while tying all players with 12 digs and adding six assists, and Louis Caiola finished with four kills and four digs. Freshman setter Patrick Mateo recorded a team-best 17 assists while adding four digs.

Brooklyn College's Aaron Siu put together a phenomenal match for the visitors, tying for the match-high of 15 kills while adding seven digs. Armand Kaloshi finished with six kills (6-1-17, .417) and five digs, and Jiaian Flanders and Omar Shawki finalized their evening with four kills apiece. Setter David Lema's 25 assists led all players, and Alvaro Gonzalez tied for the match-high of 12 digs.

Trailing 10-6 in the opening set, Medgar Evers scored eight of the next 10 points to catapult ahead by a score of 14-12. Ramsey contributed two kills during that spurt, with Kadeem Hagley also adding one. Brooklyn would answer with a 7-3 run to snatch a 19-17 edge, but a Brooklyn attack error, and an Abreu service aces, squared the set at 19.

Later, with the Cougars and Bulldogs knotted at 22 apiece, Brooklyn secured the first set victory by scoring three straight points, courtesy of a kill apiece by Siu and Kaloshi, and an awarded point to the Bulldogs, due to the Cougars being out of rotation prior to a serve.

Set two featured a classic seesaw battle. Brooklyn led 7-3 in the early stages, before four consecutive Cougars points tied things up at seven apiece. The Bulldogs answered with three straight points to go up 10-7, but Medgar Evers came right back, using a kill and a service ace by Ramsey, as well as an attack error by Shawki, to tie the set at 10-all.

The two CUNYAC foes continued to stay within arms-length of one another, with Brooklyn later holding onto a slim 17-15 advantage. The Bulldogs when finally put some distance between themselves and the hosts, rattling off six consecutive points to take a commanding 23-15 edge. Three different players earned kills during that pivotal stretch, including Jaden McBryde, Shawki, and Siu. Brooklyn eventually went on to win the set, 25-17.

Trailing by scores of 7-2, 11-5, and 14-9 in the third set, Medgar Evers refused to go quietly, battling back and pulling to within two points, 17-15, following a service error by McBryde.
