Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Brooklyn's barrage of service aces (19) too much for Cougars to overcome as Bulldogs earn sweep

The Medgar Evers Cougars men's volleyball team dropped a match to CUNYAC foe Brooklyn College last night, falling to the Bulldogs in three sets by scores of 16-25, 17-25, and 17-25. The match took place at Brooklyn College's West Quad Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to a mark of 0-13 on the 2024 campaign (0-12 CUNYAC), while the Bulldogs improved to a record of 11-14 (6-6 CUNYAC).

Pacing the Cougars despite their loss was veteran Cody Ramsey, as the standout finished with a match-high eight kills to go along with six digs and a team-best three service aces. Louis Caiola contributed six kills, two service aces, and a pair of digs, and setter Patrick Mateo's 14 assists led all Cougars. Finally, it was Isaac Akindipe finalizing his evening with a team-high seven digs.

Brooklyn College's Armand Kaloshi's five kills led the Bulldogs. Aaron Siu contributed five kills, three digs, and a pair of service aces, and Tommy Min and Jiaian Flanders both registered four service aces, with each of those aforementioned players also contributing three kills. Finally, David Lema's 20 assists and eight service aces were both match-highs.

Trailing 8-5 in the opening set, the Cougars rattled off three consecutive points to things at eight apiece. A bad set by Siu, followed by an attack error by Kaloshi, and a service ace by Caiola, accounted for those three Medgar Evers points. Brooklyn College snatched control of the set from there, however, scoring seven of the next eight to grab a commanding 15-9 advantage. Min tallied a kill and ace during that aforementioned run, with Siu also adding a kill.

A miniature 3-1 run, capped off by a service ace by Ramsey, brought the Cougars to within four (16-12), but the Bulldogs outscored the visitors 9-4 from there to take set one, 25-16. Brooklyn tallied three service aces during that final run, including two by Flanders, and one by David Lema.

Medgar Evers held advantages of 5-3, 7-5, and 8-7 in the second set, but Brooklyn College used an 11-4 spurt to take an 18-12 advantage. Min recorded a pair of kills during that ferocious Bulldogs run, with Siu sprinkling in two service aces. Later, trailing 21-14, the Cougars clawed to keep things respectable, scoring two straight via a service error by Kaloshi, and a kill by Ramsey. That made it 21-16 in favor of the hosts, but Brooklyn College finished the set by scoring four of the final five points to win it, 25-17, and take a commanding 2-0 edge in sets. An emphatic kill by Brooklyn's Aziz Abdusamiev closed the book on set two.

In the third, trailing 10-8, Medgar Evers tied the set at 10-all following a service error by Jaden McBryde, and an ensuing service ace by Ramsey. Both squads then traded runs, with the Bulldogs scoring four straight (courtesy of a kill by Tylar Pina, an attack error by Caiola, and two consecutive aces by Lema), and the Cougars following that by rattling off three consecutive points (thanks to Lema's service error, and attack errors by Flanders and Pina).

Later, trailing 15-13, the Cougars used a kill by Caiola, and an attack error by Lin, to knot the set at 15 apiece. Brooklyn College dominated from there, registering eight of the final 10 points of the set to win it, 25-17, and essentially capture the match, 3-0. Four of the Bulldogs' final 10 points came via kills, with Pina leading the run with two.

For the evening, Brooklyn College hit .214 (23-11-56), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative (15-17-55, -.036). Perhaps the biggest disparity in points scored came in the service aces column, with the Bulldogs piling 19 aces compared to the Cougars' six. Brooklyn College also held slight edges in assists (20-15) and digs (19-18).

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Thursday evening, as the Cougars will finally return to their home court to battle Pratt Institute. Start-time for the non-conference match is scheduled for 7:00pm.
