Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Ramsey, Caiola play well, but Cougars swept by non-conference borough foe Pratt

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match against borough foe Pratt Institute on Thursday evening, falling in three sets by scores of 17-25, 19-25, and 20-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-14 overall, while the Cannoneers improved to 5-13.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Cody Ramsey put together another sensational effort, registering match-highs of 10 kills and 12 digs, while also leading all teammates in service aces with three. Louis Caiola added six kills and four assists, and Isaac Akindipe finalized his evening with three kills and seven digs. Freshman setter Patrick Mateo's 13 assists were a team-high, and first-year player Kayshaun Higgs contributed seven digs.

Pacing Pratt Institute was Jason Raymond, as he efficiently hit .400 on his way to recording a team-best seven kills (7-1-15). He also added three service aces and a pair of digs. Joji Kawamura contributed five kills while tying for the team-high of six digs, and Max Wang registered four kills and nine service aces. Setter Brooks Reid put together a phenomenal all-around performance, posting match-highs of 19 assists and 10 service aces while also finishing with six digs.

The Cannoneers raced out to an early 8-0 advantage in the opening set, with Reid registering three service aces during that opening spurt. Medgar Evers battled back with four consecutive points thanks to an Akindipe kill and three errors by the visitors. That sliced Medgar Evers' deficit to four, 8-4. Pratt Institute later led 13-8 before putting considerable distance between itself and the hosts, rattling off six consecutive points to take a commanding 19-8 edge. Raymond earned a kill and a service ace during that run.

Further along in set one, Medgar Evers trailed 22-10 and hope looked bleak, but the Cougars went on a ferocious 7-1 run to pull to within six, 23-17. That aforementioned run was highlighted by a service ace by Kadeem Hagley, and a kill apiece by Ramsey and Caiola. Pratt Institute finally closed out set one with two straight points, courtesy of a kill by Wallace Hallot, and a service ace by Wang.

Medgar Evers held a 10-9 advantage in the second set before a 6-0 Pratt run catapulted the Cannoneers to a 15-10 edge. Reid registered four aces during that run, with Wang also notching a kill. The Cougars inched back with three straight points as Wang committed a hitting error, and Ramsey and Akindipe slammed home a kill apiece. That made it 15-13 in favor of Pratt.

Pratt then took control of the set, outscoring Medgar Evers 6-2 over the ensuing eight points to take a 21-15 lead. That tail end of that run included some dominance by Raymond, as he recorded a kill and consecutive service aces. Later, with the visitors firmly in front 24-19, Pratt captured the set with a kill by Kawamura.

Medgar Evers fell behind 6-2 in the third set before storming back with an 11-2 run to take a 13-8 advantage. Ramsey registered three service aces during that extended run, with Caiola adding a kill. The Cannoneers then scored eight of the next 10 points to grab the lead, 16-15. The final two points of that spurt came via Reid service aces.

Later, with the set tied at 16 apiece, the teams traded runs, with Pratt going on an 8-0 spurt to take a 24-16 edge, and Medgar Evers fighting off match point four times to pull to within four, 24-20. The Cannoneers then captured the set and essentially, the match, following a Raymond kill.

The squads almost earned an identical hitting percentage, with the Cannoneers hitting .081 (22-16-74), while Medgar Evers earned a hitting percentage of .077 (21-16-65). Pratt Institute piled a whopping 26 service aces compared to six for the hosts. The Cougars held a 29-24 edge in digs, and the squads registered 20 assists apiece.

Medgar Evers will now have off for Easter weekend before returning to the court on Tuesday evening as the Cougars will travel to Baruch College's ARC Arena to battle the Bearcats in CUNYAC action. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
