Despite exhibiting toughness in third set, Cougars swept by surging CUNYAC foe Baruch

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match on Tuesday evening, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by scores of 4-25, 12-25, and 21-25 at the ARC Arena in New York City. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-15 on the 2024 campaign (0-13 CUNYAC), while Baruch College won their 15th consecutive match after a 1-6 start to the season, improving to 16-6 (13-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Cody Ramsey and Carlos Abreu tied for the team-high in kills with four apiece. Ramsey also added a team-best five digs, and Abreu contributed two digs and an assist. Louis Caiola finalized his evening with three kills and four digs, and freshman Patrick Mateo's nine assists led all Cougars.

Juancarlos Henriquez led Baruch's balanced attack, as he registered a match-high nine kills. Peter Gavroff and Aleksandr Howard notched six kills apiece, with Gavroff also recording a team-high six digs, and Howard sprinkling in three digs and a match-high two block assists. Jackson Newcomb and Haoxin Hu finished with five kills apiece, with Newcomb also adding 10 assists and three service aces, and Hu leading all players with five service aces. Finally, it was Ryan Oommen piling a match-high 21 assists.

Baruch College dominated set one, racing out to a 7-0 advantage, with four Bearcats contributing a kill apiece (Argjend Osmanaj, Jack Centeno, Hu, and Oommen). Following consecutive Baruch errors that brought Medgar Evers to within five points (7-2), the hosts outscored the Cougars 18-2 for the remainder of the set to capture it convincingly, 25-4.

Abreu notched a kill to give the Cougars a 1-0 edge in the second set, before Baruch stormed back with six straight to snatch a 6-1 advantage. Henriquez recorded three kills during that aforementioned run, with Newcomb adding two of his own. Medgar Evers kept things respectable for a while, only trailing 11-6, but Baruch used another 6-1 run to take a commanding 17-7 edge. That run was capped by a kill by Gavroff.

Later, with Baruch holding a 21-12 lead, the hosts finished off the set with four straight points, courtesy of a kill by Henriquez, and three consecutive Cougars attack errors. The Bearcats won the set, 25-12, and took a 2-0 advantage overall in the CUNYAC clash.

Medgar Evers put a scare into Baruch in the third set. Trailing 11-6, the Cougars went on a ferocious 11-4 run to catapult ahead by a score of 17-15. Ramsey and Caiola had two kills apiece during that run, with Abreu also notching one. Baruch then tied the set thanks to a Ramsey service error, and a kill by Hu.

Later, with Baruch holding a slim 19-18 edge, an attack error by Kairos Liang tied the set at 19-all. The Bearcats would close the set and essentially, the match strong, registering six of the final eight points to win the set 25-21, and the match 3-0.

The Bearcats were very efficient with their attacks on the evening, hitting .522 (43-8-67), while Medgar Evers earned a percentage of .048 (11-9-42). Baruch held a distinct 12-2 edge in service aces, while also notching 20 digs to the Cougars' 15. Finally, the hosts piled 34 assists to Medgar Evers' 10.

The two CUNYAC foes will lock horns again on Thursday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome the Bearcats to the Cougars Cave for a 7:00pm start in what will be Medgar Evers' CUNYAC finale. The institution's Department of Athletics will also honor senior Isaac Akindipe in a special pre-match ceremony, commemorating his years of service to the men's volleyball program.
