Cougars drop CUNYAC finale to Bearcats; Senior Isaac Akindipe honored in pregame ceremony

Box Score The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team closed out the home portion of the regular season with a defeat, falling to CUNYAC foe Baruch College in a CUNYAC match by scores of 15-25, 8-25, and 7-25. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 0-16 on the 2024 campaign, wrapping up CUNYAC play 0-14.  The soaring Bearcats won their 16th straight match, improving to 17-6 on the year, and an unblemished 14-0 in conference competition.

Prior to the match, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor senior Isaac Akindipe in a special pre-match ceremony. Head Coach Eric Archer took the microphone and expressed some heartfelt sentiments about Akindipe. Archer and Director of Athletics Chetara Murphy then presented the senior with a commemorative poster in a show of appreciation for his contributions to the program over the last two seasons.

Sophomore Cody Ramsey led the way for the Cougars, tying for the match-high of five kills while leading all Cougars with three service aces and contributing three digs. Louis Caiola added a pair of kills and three digs, and freshman setter registered a team-high six assists.

For Baruch, Jack Centeno and Peter Gavroff tied for the match-high five kills. Centeno also tied for match-highs of five service aces and four digs. Juancarlos Henriquez recorded four kills on four attacks while also tying for the match-high of five service aces, and setter Ryan Oommen's 12 assists led all players.

With the opening set tied at nine apiece, the Bearcats rattled off six consecutive points to snatch a 15-9 advantage. Centeno paced Baruch during that run with three service aces, with Hu adding a kill. After the Cougars momentarily halted the run with a point, the Bearcats scored three more to take an 18-10 edge.

Medgar Evers refused to go quietly in the first set, scoring four straight points to inch to within four at 18-14. Ramsey notched three service aces during that spurt. Unfortunately for the hosts, Baruch would score seven of the final eight points of the set to win it, 25-15. The set was capped with a Centeno kill off a beautiful set from Oommen.

Baruch held a modest 7-4 advantage in the second set before dominating the rest of the way. The Bearcats used a ferocious 10-0 run to take a commanding 17-4 advantage. Henriquez registered two service aces during that aforementioned run, with Gavroff and Oommen adding a kill apiece. The Cougars scored two straight via a Ramsey kill and an attack error by Gavroff to pull to within 11 at 17-6, but Baruch scored eight of the final 10 points of the set to win it, 25-8, and take a 2-0 lead in sets for the match.

Baruch carried the momentum it built in the second set into the third, scoring 17 of the opening 20 points to take a 17-3 advantage. Centeno then recorded three more kills from that point forward, pacing the Bearcats down the stretch and pushing them to a 25-7 victory in the third set, clinching a sweep of the match in the process.

For the evening, the Bearcats' efficiency was excellent, as Baruch hit .453 (29-5-53) while the Cougars earned a hitting percentage of -.157 (9-17-51). Baruch recorded 18 service aces compared to three for Medgar Evers, and the Bearcats also held edges in assists (25-7) and digs (25-20).

Medgar Evers will wrap up its 2024 season on Sunday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to Yeshiva University to battle the Maccabees. Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
