Women's soccer team drops season-opening contest to Cardinals at York College Soccer Complex

Box Score The Medgar Evers women's soccer team played its season-opener on Monday afternoon, falling to the Cardinals of York College in a non-conference match by a score of 11-0. The clash took place at the York College Outdoor Athletic Complex in Jamaica, NY. While the match served as the Cougars' opener (0-1), the Cardinals improved to a mark of 1-3.

York College opened up the scoring in the 11th minute when Brithney Bielma scored an unassisted goal to put the Cardinals ahead 1-0. Bielma found the back of the net again at 15:02, capitalizing on a beautiful cross pass from Karyme Martinez before heading the ball into the goal to increase her team's edge to two goals (2-0). 32 seconds later, Bielma struck again, earning the hat trick and giving York a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Stephanie Ramirez earned York's fourth goal of the afternoon after slashing home a pass from Alisha Adams in the 34th minute. Emelin Cajamarca netted the Cardinals fifth and final goal of the opening session, beating the buzzer by scoring at 44:56.

In the second half, Adams scored a pair of goals, placing both in the top-corner in the opening six minutes of the second stanza, increasing the Cardinals' advantage to 7-0. Martinez and Bielma would each add one more goal apiece, and Gema Guillen would strike twice to push York's total to 11 and cap the scoring for the day.

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will travel to Lehman College's South Field to take on the Lightning in a non-conference contest. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
