Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars unable to overcome Hawks' hot shooting (50 percent) in CUNYAC defeat

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team was defeated in CUNYAC action last night, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 88-73. The contest took place at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 2-11 on the 2024-2025 campaign (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 3-10 (1-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, standout Jonathan Grimsley followed-up his performance against NJIT this past Saturday with another fantastic performance, scoring a game-high 26 points (10-19 FG) to go along with nine rebounds and a pair of assists. Ryan Panagakos drained all four of his free throw attempts, finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Michael Perez finished with seven points on the night. Andre Evans Jr. registered four assists on the evening, pushing him past former Cougar Kallai Sharpe for first all-time in that category. Evans Jr. now has 305 career assists.

Five players scored in double figures for the Hawks, including Jack Meyers, as he finished with a team-high 20 points (8-16 FG) to go along with seven rebounds. Donovan Cola connected on four shots from downtown, as he finalized his evening with 18 points and six rebounds, and Casey Meyers drilled four triples, scoring 18 points. He also snatched a game-high eight rebounds, dished five assists, and led all players with three steals. Enzo Caceres-Roussel and Jayden Jarrett netted 11 points apiece, with Caceres-Roussel's 11 assists leading all players.

Medgar Evers used the opening 3:42 of action to open up an early eight points advantage, 13-5, off of seven points from Grimsley, and another four from Andre Evans Jr. Hunter responded with a 7-0 run over a span of 3:04, which was capped by a long trifecta by Cola, as the Hawks snatched a 14-13 advantage. A bucket by Grimsley gave Medgar Evers the lead back, 15-14, and the Cougars used that as a springboard in eventually going back up by six (28-22). A strong 12-4 run by Hunter to close the half gave the Hawks a slim 34-32 edge as time expired on the session.

Hunter took a 40-32 advantage early in the second half, and it looked as though the Hawks might run away with the game, but the Cougars battled back, setting off a chain of events that saw the CUNYAC foes exchange the lead six times before the hosts took a 49-48 lead on a converted Casey Meyers three-point attempt with 14:04 left.

Later, the Hawks led 57-50 with 12:25 remaining on the clock, but the persistent Cougars once again battled back, using a 7-0 spurt (courtesy of a three-point basket by Daniel McCollum, and hoops by Ahmed Toure and Grimsley) to knot the contest at 57-all. Moments later, with the contest tied at 59 apiece, Casey Meyers struck again, draining a triple to give his team the lead for good, 62-59, with 8:39 to go. From there, the Hawks went up by as many as 17, before winning the game by 15.

Hunter College was the much more efficient team shooting the basketball, connecting on 33 of its 66 attempts from the floor (50 percent), while the Cougars earned just a 37.1 percent conversion rate (26-70). The Hawks held a 46-35 advantage on the glass, while also dishing 22 assists to Medgar Evers' 21. The Cougars did hold edges in steals (6-4) and blocks (5-2), and the teams combined for just 17 turnovers on the evening (10 for Hunter, seven for Medgar Evers).

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back this Friday evening, as the team returns to the friendly confines of the Cougars Cave to take on York College in another CUNYAC confrontation. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
