Cougars undone by Cyclones' 20 straight points to end first half as Centenary registers non-conference triumph

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cyclones of Centenary University by a score of 86-39. The contest took place at the John M. Despite the loss, the Cougars were led by veteran Boubacar Mbaye, as he scored a game-high 14 points while also tying for the game-high of seven rebounds. Omari Hinds added 10 points and five boards, and Ahmed Toure contributed five points, seven rebounds, and a game-high two blocked shots.

Only two players scored in double figures for Centenary University, but at least seven players scored at least seven points. Daniel Falk's 11 points (3-5 FG, 4-5 FT) were a team-high, and he also recorded three steals. Kenneth Rankin finalized his afternoon with 10 points and three boards, and Kenney Maira added nine points and four rebounds. Darnelle Forrest and Avery Canato netted eight points apiece, and Naire Preston and Jack Martin contributed seven each.

The Cougars kept the game close in the very early stages, as Toure's converted jumper inched Medgar Evers to within eight, 21-13, with 8:56 remaining in the half. The hosts would dominate the game from there, however. The Cyclones scored 20 consecutive points to close out the opening session, with Preston and Martin contributing seven points apiece during that aforementioned spurt. At the half, Centenary held a commanding 41-13 advantage.

Mbaye opened the scoring 24 seconds into the half with a made layup to pull Medgar Evers to within 26, but Centenary's biggest lead in the final 20 minutes was nearly double that advantage, as the Cyclones led by as many as 51 points at one juncture of the session (86-35 with 1:22 left) before advancing to win the contest, 86-39.

Centenary University converted on 43 percent of its shot attempts from the floor (34-79), while also making the most of its opportunities at the stripe, draining nine of 14 there (64.3 percent). On the flip side, the Cougars connected on 16 of 43 shots (37.3 percent), while draining six out of 10 free throws (60 percent). The Cyclones held a modest 42-35 edge on the glass, while also swiping 21 steals to just four for Medgar Evers. The hosts piled 21 assists while the Cougars had four, and Centenary won the turnover battle, committing just nine miscues compared to 34 for Medgar Evers.

The Cougars will return to action on Monday, December 1, as Medgar Evers will travel to the Ferguson Recreation Center in Madison, NJ to take on FDU-Florham. Start-time for the non-conference clash is scheduled for 7:00pm.
