Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars, paced by Moutiatou Djibring (26 points, 17 rebounds), score 23 straight second half points before falling to Baruch, 72-63

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team put a scare into CUNYAC foe Baruch College on Thursday evening, rallying from a 23-point second half deficit to tie the score, before eventually falling to the Bearcats by a score of 72-63. The thrilling CUNYAC clash took place at the ARC Arena in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 1-8 on the 2025-2026 campaign (1-1 CUNYAC), while the Bearcats improved to 4-6 (1-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, newcomer Moutiatou Djibring put forth her best game thus far this season, posting game-highs of 26 points (10-21 FG, 6-8 FT) and 17 rebounds (12 on the offensive glass) while also adding a steal. Aaliyah Lyons added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals, and Alexis Davis netted 12 points while collecting four rebounds and dishing three assists.

In the victory for the Bearcats, Lillianna Morales scored a game-high 19 points (6-13 FG, 7-10 FT) while tying for the team-high of eight rebounds, dishing five assists, and tying for the team-high of three steals. Lola Idir netted 16 points, snatched seven rebounds, and swatted a pair of shots, and D'Andre McRae finalized her evening with 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists.

Medgar Evers raced out to an early 14-6 advantage in the opening 5:37 of action, with Djibring accounting for six early points, and Lyons and Davis contributing four apiece. The Cougars later held a 16-8 edge before the hosts closed the quarter with consecutive buckets by McRae and Brianna Lopez to close the gap to four (16-12) after 10 minutes of action.

Capitalizing on the momentum they gained at the end of the opening period, the Bearcats netted the first 14 points of the second quarter to catapult ahead by a score of 26-16, and in the process, extended their run to 18-0. Lola accounted for eight of those aforementioned 14 points to open the period, as Baruch snatched control of the game. Later, with 4:47 remaining until halftime, Lola buried a triple to give Baruch a double-digit advantage for the first time (31-20).

After a converted layup by Davis stopped the bleeding, the Bearcats continued to surge, scoring the next six points to take a 37-22 edge. Medgar Evers newcomer Enphani Huskey would bury a trifecta right before halftime to pull the Cougars within 12 (37-25) as time expired on the first half.

The hosts spent most of the third quarter building a commanding lead, as the Bearcats, following a pair of drained free throws by Morales, took a 55-32 advantage with 2:11 to go in the quarter. That would be the point in the contest where the Cougars would stage their rally.

Over the next 6:30 minutes, a time period that spanned two quarters, Medgar Evers would go on a ferocious 23-0 run to tie the contest at 55-all with 5:41 remaining. During that aforementioned spurt, Djibring netted an astounding 17 points, including 13 straight at one point.

Following the Cougars' incredible run, Baruch would score the next five straight to go up 60-55, but Medgar Evers answered with consecutive hoops by Djibring and Lyons to inch to within one, 60-59, with 4:38 remaining. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they would register just one more field goal the rest of the way, while the Bearcats converted on seven out of nine free throws down the stretch. Baruch pulled away gradually, eventually winning the contest 72-63 despite a sensational push from Medgar Evers.

Baruch was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Bearcats connected on 40.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (24-59), while Medgar Evers earned a conversion rate of just 29.8 percent (25-84). Both teams struggled mightily from the free throw line, with the Bearcats missing 12 freebees (17-29, 58.6 percent), and the Cougars misfiring on 14 (12-26, 46.2 percent). The Bearcats held a modest 57-49 edge on the glass, while also dishing 21 assists to the Cougars' 14. Medgar Evers held a 13-11 advantage in steals, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 19 miscues while forcing 29 Bearcats errors.

The Cougars will wrap up calendar year 2025 on Monday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Old Westbury, NY to battle the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers. Start-time for the non-conference clash at the Clark Athletic Center is scheduled for 7:00pm.
