Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars struggle to establish offensive footing in loss to Manhattanville Valiants in Sunday matinee

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team lost a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Valiants of Manhattanville University by a score of 84-48. The contest took place at the Kennedy Gymnasium in Purchase, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-10 on the 2025-2026 campaign, while Manhattanville improved to 4-4.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Michael Perez continued his stellar senior season, scoring a game-high 16 points while also adding a pair of steals. Omari Hinds contributed 13 points, two rebounds, and two steals, and Nicholas Bocharov added five points, four rebounds, and a team-high three assists. Zachary Bussey's seven rebounds led all Medgar Evers players.

In the victory for the Valiants, Daniel Marinaccio finished with a team-high 15 points (6-10 FG) to go along with a pair of steals. Chris Robinson netted 12 points while tying for the game-high of eight rebounds. He also dished three assists on the afternoon. Andrew Saint-Louis scored eight points while snatching six boards, and John Ranaghan finalized his afternoon with eight points and five caroms. Andrew Melillo's four assists led all players on the day.

The Valiants never trailed in the non-conference clash, racing out to an early 19-6 advantage in the opening 7:36 of the contest. Robinson paced the hosts during that aforementioned run with six points. Manhattanville spent the ensuing 9:09 gradually building its advantage, eventually taking its largest lead of the second half (42-17) following a converted layup by Isiah Middletown. Five consecutive points by Bocharov gave the Cougars some momentum to end the session, but Manhattanville still took a commanding 42-22 edge into the locker room at the break.

In the second half, the closest the Cougars were able to get was 21 points down, doing it twice, once via a three-point basket by Bussey with 14:26 to go (that made it 54-33 Valiants), and the second time when Justin Rosario buried a triple to make it 58-37 Manhattanville with 11:29 to go. Manhattanville dominated the game from there, however, outscoring the Cougars 26-11 the rest of the way to account for the 36-point triumph.

Manhattanville connected on 44 percent of its shot attempts on the afternoon (33-75), while the Cougars converted on 32.7 percent of their shots (18-55). The Valiants dominated the glass, collecting 54 rebounds compared to 29 for the Cougars, and the hosts held a 17-8 edge in assists. Medgar Evers registered 12 steals to Manhattanville's nine, and the Cougars also swatted seven shots to the Valiants' four. Manhattanville won the turnover battle, committing 17 miscues to Medgar Evers' 20.

The Cougars will return to action on Thursday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to the ARC Arena in New York, NY to battle Baruch College in CUNYAC action. Start-time is scheduled for 7:30pm.
