Cougars suffer defeat to Bulldogs, still solidify CUNYAC postseason berth via Hawks' loss to Lightning

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team played its final regular season road contest of the 2024-2025 campaign, falling to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs at the West Quad Gymnasium by a score of 75-58 in CUNYAC action. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 6-18 on the season (4-9 CUNYAC), while the Bulldogs improved to 11-13, and 6-7 in CUNYAC action.

The Cougars still clinched the No. 6 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Men's Basketball Tournament, as Hunter College suffered an 80-69 loss to Lehman, eliminating the Hawks from postseason contention. Medgar Evers will be on the road to begin the playoffs against either Lehman or John Jay. All playoff matchups will be finalized following CUNYAC action this coming Tuesday.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Michael Perez drained three triples, finishing with a team-high 12 points. Ahmed Toure nearly registered a double-double, scoring nine points and snatching a game-high 12 rebounds. His three blocked shots led all players, and he also contributed two assists, as well. Joash Beaton finished with seven points on the night, and Ryan Panagakos and Jonathan Grimsley contributed six points apiece.

David McFadden connected on three trifectas for the hosts, finishing with game-highs of 17 points and seven assists. He also collected five rebounds, blocked two shots, and added a pair of steals. Malik Dale (5-7 FG) finalized his evening with 13 points, three dimes, and three steals, and Serge Thrasybule netted 11 points, registered a game-high five steals, dished four assists, and snatched three boards. Finally, it was Stephen McGill and Joe Charles scoring nine and seven points, respectively.

A bucket by Trevonne Tcha 26 seconds into the action gave the Cougars a 2-0 advantage, but nine consecutive points by the Bulldogs, led by McFadden's five, catapulted Brooklyn to a 9-2 edge. Medgar Evers kept the game close, inching to within one (13-12) and trailing just 18-16 with 10:48 remaining in the half before Brooklyn put together another spirited run.

Over a span of 5:42, the Bulldogs put together a 14-3 spurt, building a 13-point advantage (32-19) with 5:06 left in the session. McFadden was once again the primary contributor during a spurt, as he netted six points over the course of that run. Brooklyn went up by as many as 14 (38-24), but the Cougars closed the half on a 7-2 spurt to slice the Bulldogs' lead to nine (40-31) after 20 minutes of play. Beaton netted five of the Cougars' seven points during that aforementioned push.

In the early stages of the second half, Medgar Evers closed to within eight on two different occasions (44-36 and 47-39), but a 22-3 run by Brooklyn over the course of 8:46 gave the Bulldogs a commanding 27-point advantage (69-42) with 7:17 left, essentially ending any chance of a Cougars comeback.

Brooklyn College was the far more efficient team shooting the basketball on the evening, as the Bulldogs converted on 48.4 percent of their attempts from the floor (31-64), while the Cougars drained just 21 of 58 shots (36.2 percent). Medgar Evers did hold a slim 40-38 edge on the glass, but Brooklyn held advantages in assists (22-14) and steals (11-8).
