Cougars overwhelmed by Bulldogs in CUNYAC action at West Quad Gymnasium

Box Score The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team played its final regular season road contest of the 2024-2025 campaign, falling to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs at the West Quad Gymnasium by a score of 96-34 in CUNYAC action. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 3-16 on the season (3-10 CUNYAC), while the Bulldogs improved to 13-11, and 9-4 in CUNYAC action.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Alexis Davis scored a team-high 13 points while collecting four rebounds and swiping a pair of steals, while Jennifer Metra contributed nine points, tied for the team-high of seven rebounds, dished a game-high six assists, and added two steals. Aaliyah Lyons finalized her evening with five points and five rebounds, and she also tied for the game-high of four steals.

Three players scored in double figures for the victorious Bulldogs, as Anna Kitch and Brianna Gutierrez tied for the game-high of 16 points. Kitch also snatched seven rebounds, tied for the team-high of five assists, and swiped a pair of steals, and Gutierrez collected five rebounds, tied for the game-high of four steals, and added three dimes. Mary Dolgin finalized her evening with 12 points, nine boards, two steals, and two swatted shots, and Alina Estrella and Sandra Diaz finished with nine points apiece.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-0 advantage in the early stages of the CUNYAC confrontation, sparked by a Dolgin bucket in the paint and capped by a Kitch layup. Kitch would go on to score 13 first half points, which included three conversions from long range. Brooklyn continued to cruise in the second quarter, as Diaz registered consecutive layups in the final 35 seconds of the first half, giving the hosts a commanding 51-18 halftime advantage

After Medgar Evers scored the first basket of the second half, Brooklyn responded with a 20-0 run over a span of 4:52 to take a 71-20 edge. Gutierrez recorded six points during that aforementioned run, as the Bulldogs never looked back from there, finishing the game by recording 25 of the final 39 points overall, all while allowing just six more Medgar Evers field goals over the final 14:18 of game action.

The Bulldogs were locked in shooting the basketball, earning a 50.7 percent conversion rate in shots from attempted from the field (37-73). Brooklyn also connected on eight out of 19 three-point attempts (42.1 percent), and the Bulldogs also drained 14 out of 18 shots at the free throw line (77.8 percent). On the flip side, Medgar Evers converted on just 13 shots all evening (13-67, 19.4 percent). Brooklyn dominated the glass, snatching 53 rebounds compared to 41 for the Cougars, and the Bulldogs held edges in assists (26-11) and steals (19-14). Medgar Evers turned the ball over 27 times, while the hosts committed just 20 miscues.

Medgar Evers still has the inside track on clinching a CUNYAC postseason berth, as the Cougars will wrap up their regular season on Tuesday evening, taking on John Jay College. The game will take place at the Cougars Cave, with a start-time of 5:00pm. The Cougars can secure a CUNYAC playoff spot with a victory over the Bloodhounds, or a York loss to Hunter that same evening.
