Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's volleyball suffers non-conference defeats to Yeshiva University, Sarah Lawrence College

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches in recent days. This past Sunday (2/16), the Cougars were defeated by the Yeshiva University Maccabees at the Max Stern Athletic Center by scores of 8-25, 8-25, and 7-25. Then, last night at the Campbell Sports Center, Medgar Evers was shut down by the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence by scores of 2-25, 6-25, and 8-25.

With that aforementioned output, the Cougars are now 0-4 on the 2025 campaign. Yeshiva University improved to 1-5 with its victory, and Sarah Lawrence moved to a record of 6-3.

In Medgar Evers' three-set defeat to the Maccabees, newcomer Malik Williams led the way with a team-high three kills to go along with three digs. Chris Edosomwan led all players on the court with nine digs, and Edosomwan and Jose Janvier registered two assists apiece.

Yeshiva was led by Massimo Bertini in its victory, as he led all players with six kills (6-0-11, .545). Jonathan Werta contributed five kills and a team-high six digs, and Aiden Frohlich registered five kills on the afternoon. Finally, Amiti Trabelsi put together a tremendous all-around performance, recording match-highs of assists (19) and service aces (10) while also sprinkling in three kills.

The Maccabees opened the first set by scoring nine consecutive points, with Trabelsi registering six service aces during that opening spurt. Yeshiva continued its offensive barrage with kills from Menachem Solomon and Frohlich, extending its commanding advantage to 20-4. Medgar Evers did register three consecutive points, highlighted by a service ace from Edosomwan, but Yeshiva scored five of the final six points of the set to win it.

Set two started in similar fashion, as Yeshiva raced out to a 6-0 advantage, with Trabelsi accounting for three service aces. Medgar Evers kept things close temporarily, outscoring the hosts 6-5 over the ensuing 11 points, with Williams contributing a kill, and Nkosi Fraser adding a service ace. The Maccabees, however, put forth multiple runs of their own, shutting down any attempt of a Cougars comeback. For the remainder of the set, Yeshiva put together runs of 6-0, 5-0, and 4-0, scoring 15 of the final 18 points overall. The Maccabees won the second set by 17.

Trailing 4-3 in the third set, a kill by Edosomwan, and an attack error by Werta, gave the Cougars a 5-4 advantage. The teams then alternated the next two points, before Yeshiva University took full control. A dominant run, fueled by key plays from all six Maccabees on the court, saw the hosts snatch a commanding 23-6 lead. After a kill by Chrisnel Nicolas momentarily halted Yeshiva's run, the Maccabees scored the next two points, with the latter point courtesy of a Bertini kill, as the hosts captured the set and the match.

In the Cougars' loss to the Gryphons, Medgar Evers was led by Williams' pair of kills. Veteran Kayshaun Higgs contributed a match-high six digs, and Shabbir Ahmed added three digs.

Jackson Perhaes paced Sarah Lawrence in its victory. As he posted a match-high 17 service aces, while tying for the match-high of three kills. Nathan Dreger tied for the match-high of three kills, Alex Xie's 12 assists led all players.

The opening set of the non-conference clashed was marked by a strong stretch of serves by Calle-Schulz, as the Gryphons snatched an early 12-0 advantage. Following a Sarah Lawrence error, a kill by Lucas Buckley restarted Sarah Lawrence's offensive barrage, starting a run of four consecutive points as the Gryphons took a 16-1 lead. After a service error by Ayden Wyre, Saran Lawrence finished the set with nine consecutive points, highlighted by Perhaes' seven aces during that stretch.

Nate Davis and Calle-Schulz both tallied kills early in the second, and five more service aces by Perhaes gave the Gryphons a 9-2 advantage. Following a Cougars point, Sarah Lawrence notched seven consecutive points, including a pair of aces by Davis. A kill and ace by Nathan Dreger pushed the Gryphons closer to a two-set advantage before a pair of service aces by Calle-Schulz clinched a 25-6 second-set victory for the hosts.

With the third set tied at three apiece, another five service aces by Perhaes helped the Gryphons once again put distance between themselves and the Cougars. Kills by Roney and Dreger, along with three service aces by Jozef Kandrac, helped Sarah Lawrence inch closer to a non-conference triumph. After a pair of late Perhaes kills, a Medgar Evers error secured the sweep for the hosts.

Medgar Evers will return to the court tomorrow, as the Cougars will play their home opener against CUNYAC foe Lehman College. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 6:00pm.
