Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball's 2024-2025 campaign comes to end with CUNYAC quarterfinal defeat at Lehman College

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team saw its 2024-2025 campaign finalize on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 6 seeded Cougars were defeated by No. 3 Lehman College by a score of 98-66. The game took place at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the loss, the Cougars finished their season at 6-20, while the Lightning improved to 18-8, advancing to Tuesday's semifinal at No. 2 seeded John Jay (7:00pm).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, senior standout Jonathan Grimsley played exceptionally well in his final game for the institution, tying for the game-high of 25 points (9-17 FG, 6-6 FT) to go along with five rebounds and a pair of steals. Fellow senior Ryan Panagakos connected on three triples, finishing with 13 points and three rebounds, and sharpshooter Michael Perez added eight points, a game-high three blocked shots, and two steals.

Four players scored in double figures for the Lightning, including Lasana Camara, as he tied for the game-high of 25 points while leading all players with 18 rebounds. Kai Parris and Kofi Mends scored 19 points apiece, with Parris adding 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots, and Mends contributing a pair of rebounds and two assists. Finally, it was Amar Ndiaye scoring 11 points, seven boards, and two swatted shots.

The Lightning raced out a 15-4 advantage in the opening 4:57 of action, sparked by Camara's six points, and Parris' four. Medgar Evers put together a 9-2 run over the ensuing 4:31 to inch to within four points (17-13), with Grimsley contributing four points during that aforementioned spurt. From there, it was all Lehman College. The Lightning outscored the Cougars 27-15 for the remainder of the half, at one point holding Medgar Evers without a field goal over a span of 6:10. As the teams headed into the locker room at halftime, the Lightning led by 16 (44-28).

In the second half of action, Lehman College gradually added to its commanding advantage, going up by as many as 40 points at one juncture (93-53), before the Cougars closed out the game on a 13-5 run. It was too little, too late for Medgar Evers at that point, as the Lightning won the game by 32 points, punching their ticket to the CUNYAC semifinals.

Lehman College was the far more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the hosts earned a conversion rate of 52.1 percent (37-71), while Medgar Evers connected on 21 of 68 shot attempts for the afternoon (30.9 percent). The Lightning held advantages in rebounds (55-33) and assists (21-8), The Cougars held a 7-5 edge in steals, and a 6-5 advantage in blocked shots. Medgar Evers also won the turnover battle, committing just nine miscues, while the hosts finished with 12.

Despite the finalization of the Cougars' season, there were still a plethora of positives. Senior Andre Evans Jr. solidified himself as the program's all-time leader in steals and assists, while also becoming just the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 points. Jonathan Grimsley rejoined the program and didn't miss a beat, establishing himself as one of the most prolific offensive players in the CUNYAC. Newcomer Ahmed Toure acclimated well to Brian Nigro's system, establishing himself as a tough, dynamic presence. The team registered an upset victory over the defending CUNYAC champions, the Baruch College Bearcats, back on February 11. The team made the CUNYAC postseason for the first time since 2022-2023, and now awaits word of potential CUNYAC postseason honors, which should be announced by the conference next week.
