Women's basketball's 2024-2025 campaign finalizes with CUNYAC quarterfinal loss to Brooklyn College

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team saw its 2024-2025 campaign finalize on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 6 seeded Cougars were defeated by No. 3 Brooklyn College by a score of 66-34. The game took place at the West Quad Gymnasium in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars finished their season at 3-18, while the Bulldogs improved to 15-11, advancing to Tuesday's semifinal at No. 2 seeded Baruch (5:30pm).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Sheily Quezada posted a double-double, recording team-highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds, a game-high two swatted shots. She also dished two assists, and swiped a pair of steals. Jennifer Metra scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, and registered team-highs of four assists and three steals, and Aaliyah Lyons finalized her afternoon with six points, three boards, and three assists.

Four players scored in double figures for the victorious Bulldogs, as Anna Kitch posted game-highs of 15 points and 12 rebounds, while also dishing three assists. Dior Dorsey finalized her afternoon with 11 points, eight rebounds, and game-highs of six assists and six steals, and Ameea Daniel posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Finally, Alina Estrella netted 10 points, grabbed two rebounds, and dished two assists.

Metra scored the first basketball of the postseason clash 25 seconds in, but the Bulldogs responded by rattling off 12 consecutive points, included a pair of converted trifectas knocked down by Kitch. Brooklyn College extended its lead to 24-8 following a drained bucket by Mary Dolgin with just under a minute to go in the first quarter. 

Quezada scored the final bucket of the opening period, while also draining the first two jumpers of the second quarter, to help the Cougars slice their deficit to 10, 24-14, with 8:55 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs responded with scoring the next 10 points, with that run highlighted by consecutive three-point conversions by Estrella. The Bulldogs would head into halftime with a 37-18 advantage. 

Brooklyn opened the second half with an 11-0 run capped by a made lay-up finished by Audrey Waldvogel, extending the host's commanding advantage to 30, 48-18.  The Bulldogs held Medgar Evers scoreless for the first five 4:57 of the second half, as the Cougars finally broke that scoring drought with a pair of made free throws by Metra. Medgar Evers would close the third by scoring six of the next eight points, with Metra, Quezada, and Shanya Aitcheson scoring two points apiece. After 30 minutes of action, Brooklyn led by 24 (50-26).

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Cougars 16-8 to account for the 32-point margin of victory.

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball, with Brooklyn College earning a 35.1 percent conversion rate (27-77), and Medgar Evers hitting on just 14 of its 55 attempts for the afternoon (25.5 percent). The Bulldogs held advantages in rebounds (63-31), assists (19-9), and steals (17-7). The Cougars held a 3-0 edge in blocks, and Brooklyn won the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues, while Medgar Evers finished with 24.

Despite the finalization of the Cougars' season, there were still a plethora of positives. Junior recruit Alexis Davis came in an made a tremendous impact, establishing herself as a corner stone of the program, while Sheily Quezada continued to rewrite the Cougars' record books with her stellar play (she currently leads CUNYAC in blocks, and tops the CUNYAC and NCAA Division III leaderboards in swatted shots per game). Jennifer Metra and Aaliyah Lyons took steps forward. The team made the CUNYAC postseason for the second straight season, and now awaits word of potential CUNYAC postseason honors, which should be announced by the conference next week.
