Men's volleyball swept by Hawks in CUNYAC doubleheader; Senior Kayshaun Higgs honored on Senior Night

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a pair of CUNYAC matches on Thursday evening, falling to conference rival Hunter College at the Cougars Cave. The Cougars dropped the opening match by scores of 5-25, 6-25, and 3-25, before losing the second contest 2-25, 3-25, 4-25. With the defeats, Medgar Evers is now 0-10 on the 2025 campaign (0-7 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 11-9 (7-1 CUNYAC).

Prior to the match, senior Kayshaun Higgs was honored by the Medgar Evers College Department of Athletics. Kayshaun was presented with a commemorative picture frame from Director of Athletics Chetara Murphy and Head Coach Vaughn Ford in a show of appreciation for his dedication to the men's volleyball program over the past two seasons.

In the opening match, Jose Janvier, Malik Williams, and Nkosi fraser each tallied a kill apiece for the Cougars. Taosif Elahi also contributed a pair of digs on the evening for the hosts.

Ahmed Mohamed was the primary contributor for the Hawks in their victory, as he registered a match-high 12 kills (12-1-15, .733), while also leading all players with seven digs. The standout also registered four service aces on the night. Admir Cekic and Lucas George recorded seven kills apiece, with Cekic also leading all players with 10 service aces and collecting six digs. Setter Lennny Arbitman piled 28 assists in the victory for the visiting Hawks.

After cruising the victory in the opening two sets, Hunter led 7-3 in the third before rattling off an impressive 18 consecutive points to close out the opener.

In the second set of the evening, Medgar Evers' Shabbir Ahmed recorded two digs on the evening, while Chrisnel Nicolas contributed a solo block for the hosts.

Crisotomo Ibarra led the way for Hunter College with a match-high eight kills on 10 attempts (8-2-10, .600). Kyle Foley added six kills (6-1-8, .625) and five digs, and Jaidan LaSalle finished with a match-best 15 service aces for the match. Setter Brandon Yeh's 13 assists led all players.

Hunter College scored 14 straight points to wrap up the first set, 10 consecutive points to capture the second set, and 11 straight to close out the third.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday morning, as the Cougars will travel to the Bronx to tussle with CUNYAC foe Lehman. Start-time at the APEX Center is scheduled for 10:00am.
