Men's soccer unable to halt Mitchell College's offensive firepower as Cougars drop non-conference affair

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team dropped their second consecutive match to start the 2025 campaign, falling to the Mariners of Mitchell College by a score of 8-1 on Saturday afternoon. The match took place at Alumni Field in New London, Connecticut. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to 0-2, while the Mariners improved to 1-2.

Mitchell opened the scoring in the 19th minute on a Medgar Evers own goal to take a 1-0 advantage. Diego Chavez quickly followed by slashing a ball into the net in the 23rd minute, and Gabe Ansani added another unassisted tally at 24:50 to put the Mariners ahead 3-0.

Medgar Evers responded in the 28th minute, scoring its first goal of the 2025 campaign, courtesy of newcomer Angel Valerio. Mitchell quickly regained control as Flavio Alvarado scored less than a minute later. Oscar Mendoza-Soto put an exclamation point on the first-half surge in the 37th minute by rocketing a ball home (from Alvarado) to give Mitchell a 5-1 edge as time expired on the opening session.

The Mariners scoring barrage continued in the second half, with Jo'metrius Davis finding the net in the 49th minute, followed by two late goals from Ansani at 66:27 and 82:57, completing his hat trick. Ansani finished with three goals on the afternoon. Chris Costa and Sean Khan registered one assist apiece for the victorious hosts.

Mitchell College held a slim 17-13 edge in shots, but the Mariners scored goals on 47 percent of those shot attempts. Mariners goalkeeper Gabriel Tiene logged 77:28 of action, getting the victory while allowing just one goal and stopping six shots. Medgar Evers netminder Clirian Nunez took the loss, allowing eight goals and making four saves.

The Cougars will have a quick opportunity to bounce back, as the team returns to action on Monday evening, traveling to Fleming Field in Bronxville, NY to battle the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
