Men's basketball's offense generates just 53 points in CUNYAC defeat to Bearcats at Cougars Cave

Box Score The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game last night, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 74-53. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-19 on the 2025-2026 campaign (0-8 CUNYAC), while the Bearcats improved to 8-11 (5-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was paced by veteran Boubacar Mbaye, as he scored a team-high 15 points (6-15 FG) to go along with four rebounds and a team-high two swatted shots. Ahmed Toure contributed 12 points while snatching a team-high seven rebounds and tying for the game-high of three steals. He also recorded two assists, as well. Finally, it was Isaiah Grant connecting on three triples, finishing with nine points and snatching two rebounds.

Three players scored in double figures for the Bearcats, including Nicholas Lam, as he drained six of his nine shots from the floor, and all three of his attempts at the stripe, to finish with a game-high 16 points in 23 minutes of action. He also snatched four rebounds, dished a game-high four assists, and tied for the game-high of three steals. Peter Douvres finished his evening with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists, and Jack Gordon contributed 11 points on the night.

Baruch opened the game with two quick layups (4-0) and took a double-figure lead (19-9) after two converted free throws by Brandon Sun with 8:58 remaining in the half. Medgar Evers used an 8-0 run over a span of 1:12 to inch within two points (fueled by Boubacar's five points, a bucket by Michael Perez, and a converted freebee by Rosario), but Leyi Adebayo knocked down a free throw and a layup to stretch the Beartcats' advantage back to five (22-17).

The visitors outscored the Cougars 19-9 for the remainder of the half, as Baruch took a commanding 15-point edge (41-26) into the locker room at halftime.

Medgar Evers scored the first five points to start the second stanza, courtesy of a made jumper by Toure, and a three-point play by Boubacar. That brought the hosts within 10 (41-31), but it was all Baruch College from there. The Bearcats answered the Cougars' modest spurt with a quick 9-0 run (thanks to five points from Lam, and two points apiece by Gordon and Mano Idir) to go up 19.

The Bearcats would lead by as many as 26 on two different occasions during the second half, and down the stretch, would never lead by fewer than 18 points, cruising to a solid victory.

The visitors made the most of their opportunities shooting the basketball, earning an overall conversion rate of 43.9 percent (29-66), and 10 of 12 free throws on the evening (83.3 percent). On the flip side, Medgar Evers hit on just 27.4 percent from the floor (20-73), while draining just 40 percent of its shots from the stripe (8-20).

Baruch College dominated the glass, collecting 61 rebounds compared to 34 for the hosts. The Bearcats also held a 20-14 edge in assists, but the Cougars swiped 11 steals to the opposition's seven. Medgar Evers also held a 5-4 advantage in blocks on the evening, and the hosts won the turnover battle, committing just 10 miscues, while Baruch finished with 21.

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday, January 31, as Medgar Evers will travel to the APEX Center in the Bronx to battle the Lightning of Lehman College in another CUNYAC game. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 3:00pm.
