The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Baruch College Bearcats on Saturday afternoon at Linden Park in the Cougars' regular-season finale. With the victory, Baruch clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the 2026 CUNYAC Men's Soccer Tournament, while No. 6 Medgar Evers will advance to Wednesday's quarterfinal round to take on the Brooklyn Bulldogs at BC Field.Â
The Bearcats struck twice in the opening seven minutes, with Aleska Oborina finding the back of the net at 6:34 and again at 7:10. Ignacio Cutello-Edgar assisted on both goals, giving the visitors an early 2-0 advantage.
The Cougars responded in the 15th minute when Shackoneal Myrurrie converted a penalty kick at 14:48 to cut the deficit to 2-1. Myrurrie's team-leading 13th goal energized the Medgar Evers attack, as the hosts looked to draw even before halftime.
The first half also featured a chaotic sequence in the 28th minute, when Baruch goalkeeper Dzmitry Piatrashka and Medgar Evers forward Kevin Blackstock Jr. were both shown red cards. Baruch goalkeeper Zaid Mohamed entered the match and made six saves, including a crucial one just before the final horn, to help preserve the lead.
Medgar Evers applied considerable pressure throughout the afternoon, out-shooting Baruch 24-12 and earning four corner kicks to the Bearcats' three. Mouhammadou Diallo led the Cougars with six shots, including four on target, while Myrurrie finished with seven shots and two on goal. Vendel Joseph recorded five saves in 90 minutes between the posts.
Despite generating numerous scoring opportunities, the Cougars were unable to find an equalizer in the second half as Baruch held on for the victory.
The Cougars will now attempt to turn the page on today's tough loss, as Medgar Evers is back in the CUNYAC postseason for the first time since 2015, and will look to capture its first conference crown since 2002.
