Myrurrie’s Goal Propels Cougars to first CUNYAC playoff win since 2009 as Medgar Evers downs Brooklyn, 1-0

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team registered its first CUNYAC playoff victory in 17 years on Wednesday evening, as the No. 6 Cougars (9-3-2) turned back the No. 3 Brooklyn College Bulldogs (7-4-5) by a score of 1-0 in the 2026 quarterfinal round.

Prior to this evening, the Cougars' last victory in the tournament was back in 2009, when the Cougars earned a home 2-0 win over Lehman College in the CUNYAC quarterfinals.

Shackoneal Myrurrie broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute, finding the back of the net at 54:43 to give the Cougars the lead they would not relinquish. Mouhammadou Diallo and Shammar Edwards assisted on the goal, which proved to be the difference in a tightly contested quarterfinal at Brooklyn College Field.

Medgar Evers controlled much of the first half offensively, out-shooting Brooklyn 9-2 while generating several opportunities to take the lead. Myrurrie tested Bulldogs goalkeeper Juan Solis Cazares multiple times, but the teams entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

The Cougars continued their pressure after the break, and their persistence paid off less than 10 minutes into the second half. Diallo and Edwards combined to set up Myrurrie, who finished the opportunity for his 14th goal of the season.

Brooklyn attempted to respond, creating several chances as the half progressed. However, Medgar Evers goalkeeper Vendel Joseph delivered when called upon, finishing with three saves to secure the shutout. The Cougars' defense also limited the Bulldogs to eight total shots, including three on target.

Medgar Evers finished with a 15-8 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Brooklyn goalkeeper Solis Cazares recorded seven saves to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance, but the Cougars held firm through the final whistle.

The victory marked a significant postseason achievement for Medgar Evers, which entered the conference tournament following a strong regular-season finish highlighted by its first CUNYAC playoff berth since 2015.

Myrurrie led the Cougars with seven shots, including six on target, while Joseph anchored the defensive effort with his clean sheet.

With the victory, the Cougars now advance to the CUNYAC semifinal round against No. 2 Hunter College, a clash that will take place this Saturday at Randall's Island (Field #83), with a start-time of 2:00pm.
