Men's volleyball drops home opener to CUNYAC foe Hunter College in straight sets

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped its home opener on Tuesday evening, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by scores of 7-25, 5-25, and 7-25. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Ever dipped to a mark of 0-2 on the 2025-2026 campaign (0-1 CUNYAC), while the Hawks upper their record to 6-2 (1-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, newcomer Christian Owolabi posted team-highs of three kills and three digs. Veteran Shabbir Ahmed added a team-best two assists to go along with a dig, and Matthew Fleming contributed a kill and two digs.

Three players recorded at least five kills for the Hawks in their victory, as Jon Domingo notched a match-high six, and Jaiden LaSalle and Eddy Kang contributed five apiece. Hunter piled 22 service aces on the evening, with Lenny Arbitman's six leading the way. Emmanuel Cochran and Anthony Bardales notched five service aces apiece, and Brandon Yeh's 15 assists led all players.

Hunter raced out to an early 3-0 advantage in the opening set, but a service error by Cochran, as well as an attack error by K-Ci Akwandoh, and a service ace by Nkosi Fraser, leveled the set at three apiece. The visitors notched the next three points thanks to a kill apiece by Akwandoh and Demetri Gournelos, and a service ace by Yeh, but a pair of Hunter errors inched Medgar Evers to within one, 6-5.

Despite keeping the opening set close in the early stages, the Cougars weren't able to keep up with the fast-paced Hawks, as Hunter registered 19 of the final 21 points of the set to win it, 25-7. The Hawks hit .611 in the set (13-2-18), by far its most efficient set of the evening.

Hunter College used nine kills and seven service aces to capture the second set, 25-5. Domingo, Cochran, and Akwandoh each registered two kills apiece in the set, with Cochran pacing Hunter with four service aces.

The Hawks scored the first 15 points of the third and final set, with Anthony Bardales notching five service aces in that aforementioned charge. Hunter would outscore Medgar Evers 10-7 for the remainder of the set to win it, 25-7, and essentially capture the match, 3-0.

Hunter hit .457 for the evening (30-9-46) while recording 26 assists, 22 service aces, and 18 digs. Medgar Evers hit in the negative (4-9-32, -.156) while recording four digs, a service ace, and seven assists.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Cougars make the short trip to the Hill Center to battle the Bears of St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn). Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
