Men's volleyball drops non-conference match, falling to inter-borough foe St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) in straight sets

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match in straight sets last night, falling to the Bears of St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) by scores of 7-25, 7-25, and 5-25. The match took place at the Hill Center in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-3 on the 2026 campaign, while the hosts improved to 3-2.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Chrisnel Nicolas registered a team-high three kills on the evening while hitting .167 (3-2-6). Newcomer Christian Owolabi added a pair of kills while tying for the team-high of four digs, and veteran Nkosi Fraser finalized his evening by posting a team-best two service aces, while tying for the team-high of four digs.

Pacing the Bears of St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) was Thomas Pinto, as he tied for the match-high of six kills while hitting .556 on the evening (6-1-9). He also added four service aces, while notching a pair of digs. Xavier Belfon tied Pinto with six kills (6-0-6, .1000). Belfon also notched three service aces on the evening for the Bears. Keiran McMullan's 17 assists led all players, and he also contributed four service aces, two digs, and a kill, and Jack Buscaglia's five service aces were a match-high.

St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) raced out to an early 7-1 advantage in the opening set, with Jeremias Martinez and Trey DeMeo notching kills in the opening sequence. Medgar Evers used a 5-3 run to inch to within (four) behind two kills from Nicolas, a kill apiece from Owolabi and Fraser, and an error by the hosts. The Bears then used a 15-1 charge, highlighted by five service aces from Buscaglia, and two kills apiece from Belfon, Martinez, and Ian McIntosh, to take the set, 25-7.

The Bears captured set two by an identical 25-7 score. McMullan added to the hosts' service ace total by notching four in the set, while also registering seven assists. Pinto and James McNiece were the primary attackers for the Bears during the set, with the two youngsters combining for six kills.

In the third set, Medgar Evers notched two of the first three points behind a service ace from Fraser, and a kill from Owolabi, as the Cougars took an early 2-1 advantage. St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) charged back with seven consecutive points, including three service aces by McIntosh, and a kill by Pinto, to take an 8-2 edge. Over the course of the final combined points scored in the set by both teams, the Bears got two service aces apiece by McNiece, Pinto, and Richard Ortega, while McNiece also added three kills as the Bears cruised to an easy 25-5 triumph in set three.

For the evening, the Bears registered 26 service aces while posting a .479 hitting percentage (26-3-48). St. Joe's also piled 24 assists, while notching 21 digs. On the flip side, Medgar Evers hit in the negative (8-10-40, -.050) while recording a pair of service aces, six assists, and 13 digs.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Old Westbury, NY to take on the Panthers in non-conference action. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
