Cougars shut down by Lightning in straight sets Thursday evening at the APEX Center

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match on Thursday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College in straight sets, by scores of 3-25, 6-25, and 7-25. The match took place at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-4 on the 2026 campaign (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Lightning bumped to 5-7 (2-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, newcomer Christian Owolabi registered the lone kill for his squad, to go along with a team-high three digs. Additionally, it first-year player Matthew Fleming recording the only assist on the evening for the visitors.

Lehman College was paced by Oscar Calderon, with the youngster pulling off nearly a perfect hitting percentage, as he scored eight kills on nine attack attempts (.889). He also contributed three service aces, a match-high two solo blocks, and an assist. Jordan Johnson added five kills, and Alain Abreu Esteva finalized his evening with four kills (4-0-4, 1.000), a match-high six service aces, and two digs. Eric Lin (four kills, nine assists) and John Zerafa (four service aces, nine assists) played key roles in the Lightning's victory as well.

The Lightning cruised a 25-3 victory in the opening set, hitting .750 (9-0-12) while piling 10 service aces. Johnson led the charge with four kills, while Abreu Esteva and Calderon notched four and three service aces, respectively.

Medgar Evers raced out to a 2-0 advantage in the second set, courtesy of a kill by Owolabi, and a service error by Lehman's Enea Doci. The Lightning responded in a big way, notching 25 of the next 29 points to capture set two, 25-6. Abreu Esteva contributed four kills during the set, while Calderson and Nathaniel Matthie added three apiece. Matthie also notched three of his team's six aces in the second set.

Lehman rattled off the first 10 points of the third set, highlighted by Zerafa's four service aces, and Eric Lin's three kills. In the latter stages of the set, with the Lightning leading 22-7, Lehman closed out the CUNYAC clash with kills by Calderon and Johnson, sandwiched around an attack error by veteran Chrisnel Nicolas.

The hosts hit .609 (32-4-46) with 22 service aces in their triumph.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Monday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, NY to tussle with the Beavers in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
