Senior Jennifer Metra's final shot of Cougars career is a buzzer-beating game-winner, as Medgar Evers rallies to defeat York, 48-47

Senior guard Jennifer Metra's final shot as a member of the Cougars went in, and the Medgar Evers women's basketball team capped off its 2025-2026 campaign with a victory, defeating the Cardinals of York College by a score of 48-47. The CUNYAC clash took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY. With the triumph, the Cougars wrapped up their season at 3-21 (2-12 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals finalized their year at 0-19 (0-14 CUNYAC).

Metra's game-winner came as part of a double-double for the senior, as she finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and a team-high five steals. Moutiatou Djibring finalized her season by posting her 11th double-double of the year, scoring 14 points, snatching a game-high 25 rebounds, and adding two steals. Enphani Huskey scored eight points while collecting eight rebounds, and Bryanna Merger contributed five points, three rebounds, and three steals in the victory.

Despite the loss for the Cardinals, Amaniya Aiken scored a game-high 23 points while adding 12 rebounds and a pair of assists. Beautifull Earth netted 20 points while swiping a game-high 10 steals, snatching eight rebounds, and dishing three assists, and Tyla Hooks and Chamiya Foy collected 14 and 17 rebounds, respectively.

York opened the contest with four consecutive points, courtesy of a bucket apiece by Earth and Aiken. Huskey answered with two triples over the Cougars' next three possessions to give Medgar Evers a 6-4 advantage. After a hoop by Earth knotted the game at six apiece with 5:39 left in the first quarter, Medgar Evers rattled off five consecutive points, courtesy of a bucket by Lyons, and a three-point basket by Merger.

Later in the first quarter, with 2:16 remaining, Jada Lambert converted on three straight free throw attempts after being fouled on an attempt from downtown. That ballooned the Cougars' edge to eight, 14-6. The hosts, however, would finish the quarter on an 8-2 run to inch to within two (16-14) after 10 minutes of action. Aiken scored five of the aforementioned eight Cardinals points during that spurt.

York College scored the first six points of the second quarter, courtesy of four points by Aiken, and two from Earth. That stretched the Cardinals' run to 14-2, as York took a 20-16 advantage. Medgar Evers answered back with buckets by Djibring and Hailey Broderick to knot the game at 20-all. The teams would find themselves deadlocked at 22-all, 24-all, and 26-all, before time expired on the first half of action.

In a low-scoring third quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Cougars 14-6. Medgar Evers managed just one field goal the entire period, a bucket by Djibring 13 seconds in. Earth (six points) and Aiken (five points) combined for 11 of York's 14 points in the quarter, as the hosts took a 40-32 advantage after 30 minutes of action.

Metra scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to inch the visitors to within four (40-36) with 6:43 remaining. 14 seconds later, Merger would convert on a layup off a pass from Metra to inch Medgar Evers to within two. Later in the period, with 4:45 left, Huskey nailed a jumper to tie the game at 40 apiece.

With under 3:00 left in the season, and Medgar Evers holding a 43-41 edge, Earth drained a layup to tie the game at 43-all. On the Cougars' ensuing possession, Djibring put Medgar Evers in the lead by draining a jumper to make it 45-43 in favor of the visitors. Djibring would later split a pair of freebees with 1:13 to go to stretch Medgar's edge to three (46-43), but consecutive buckets by Aiken and Earth over the next 40 seconds gave York a one-point edge, 47-46.

On Medgar Evers' next possession, Keanna Clouden would commit a foul, sending Huskey to the line. The youngster would misfire on both free throws, with Foy collecting the rebound and swinging it over to Earth. Earth would then get fouled with 15 seconds left, however, she would miss both free throws. Foy would grab the board, but, instead of taking the ball out, she would attempt a layup, which she missed, with Metra collecting the board. Medgar Evers then immediately took a timeout, leaving 11 seconds on the clock.

Coming out of the timeout, Medgar Evers ran a play for Merger, who misfired on a three-point attempt. With time winding down, an alert Metra grabbed the rebound and put up an eight-foot jumper at the buzzer, drilling it, and giving the Cougars the win. Metra was than mobbed by her teammates, and the frenzy was on, as Medgar Evers celebrated a thrilling season-ending win.

The Cougars won the game despite shooting just 17.8 percent from the floor (16-90) and 56.5 percent from the free throw line (13-23). York didn't fare much better, as the Cardinals connected on just 19 of 73 shot attempts (26 percent), and earned a 40 percent conversion rate from the stripe (8-20).

Medgar Evers held a 73-64 edge on the glass, but York College held a modest 16-14 advantage in steals. The teams dished five assists apiece, and each squad committed 27 turnovers on the evening.
