Joash Beaton contributes team-highs of 17 points, 11 rebounds as Cougars drop season finale to Cardinals

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team finalized its 2025-2026 campaign last night with a lopsided defeat, falling to the Cardinals of York College by a score of 103-41 in CUNYAC action. The game took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY. With the loss, the Cougars wrapped up their season at 1-24 (1-13 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals improved to 8-13 (8-6 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the visitors, senior Joash Beaton played well in his final game, posting a double-double with team-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Boubacar Mbaye added seven points and a pair of rebounds, and Gent Sinananj finalized his evening with six points and six rebounds.

Five players scored in double figures for the Cardinals, including Joshua Jackman, as he posted game-highs of 30 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks. His three steals also tied for the game-high. Benjamin Grant netted 16 points while collecting eight rebounds and dishing two assists, and Jonte Wallace finalized his evening with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Christopher Smith (10 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals) and Gozie Chinegwundoh (10 points, two rebounds) also played key roles in York's win.

Jackman's pair of three-point conversions sparked an early York College run that saw the Cardinals score the first 11 points of the game over the first 2:50 of action. Later in the quarter, Beaton would convert on a layup to pull Medgar Evers to within nine points (17-8), but 18 consecutive points by the Cardinals (highlighted by Jackman's eight points, and Grant's five) pushed York's edge to 27 (35-8) with 6:16 remaining in the half.

With 1:50 remaining in the half, Jackman converted on a long triple to give York a commanding 32-point advantage (47-15). York ultimately held a 49-20 lead as time expired on the first half.

Continuing their dominance on both sides of the floor, the Cardinals began the second half by outscoring the Cougars 24-2, boosting their lead to 51 points (73-22) with 13:20 left in the contest. Despite the comfortable lead, York's defense continued to hum, as the Cardinals allowed just five Cougars field goals the rest of the way, cruising to a 62-point triumph.

The Cardinals were locked in offensively all evening, shooting 48.9 percent from the floor (44-90), including a conversion rate of 46.7 percent from downtown (7-15). York also connected on eight out of 12 shots from the stripe (66.7 percent). On the flip side, the Cougars only connected on 16 out of 81 attempts (19.8 percent), knocking down just 1 out of 31 shots from downtown in the process (3.2 percent), while also earning a conversion rate of 57.1 percent from the line (8-14).
