Men's volleyball opens up 2026 campaign with loss in straight sets to SUNY Old Westbury Panthers

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team started its 2026 season last night, dropping a non-conference match to the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury by scores of 6-25, 7-25, and 11-25. The contest took place Old Westbury, NY. While the match served as the opener for the Cougars (0-1), the Panthers improved to a mark of 2-1.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Christian Owolabi led all players with six digs on the evening, with veteran Shabbir Ahmed adding five. Chrisnel Nicolas contributed a pair of digs and a solo block, while Nkosi Fraser recorded a pair of digs. Finally, it was Kimahli Reid notching the team's lone service ace.

The hosts were paced by Damian Villamil and Torrence Fredericks, as they tied for the match-high of four kills. Villamil also added a pair of servce aces for SUNY Old Westbury. Shane Kielb finalized his evening with three kills and three service aces, and Ashel Santos' 10 service aces were a match-high. Finally, Lucas Rogers' 11 assists led all players.

After the Panthers dominated the opening two sets by scores of 25-6 and 25-7, Medgar Evers raced out to an early 7-5 advantage in the final set courtesy of five Panthers attack errors, as well as a service ace by Reid. SUNY Old Westbury responded with four consecutive points (courtesy of a Nicolas service error, a bad set by Matthew Fleming, a service ace by Kielb, and an attack error by Reid) to catapult ahead by a score of 9-7.

A service error by SUNY Old Westbury's Kielb halted the Panthers' run of our straight points, but the Panthers recovered well, rattling off the next 13 points to take a commanding 22-8 advantage, before eventually winning the set, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.

For the match, SUNY Old Westbury held a 26-1 edge in service aces, an 18-0 advantage in assists. The hosts hit .148 on the night (21-13-54), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative (0-15-38, -.395). The Panthers registered 22 digs on the evening, compared to 15 for the Cougars, and SUNY Old Westbury held a 3-0 advantage in total blocks.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the team will play its home opener against CUNYAC foe Hunter College. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
