Cougars drop non-conference contest to Cannoneers Saturday afternoon at Pratt ARC

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute in straight sets, by scores of 7-25, 10-25, and 15-25. The match took place at the Pratt ARC in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-7 on the 2026 campaign, while the Cannoneers improved to a record of 4-7.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Kimahli Reid finalized his afternoon by tying for team-highs of three digs and two service aces. Matthew Fleming also added two service aces as well. Nkosi Fraser contributed three digs, and newcomer Ahmed Toure earned the Cougars' lone kill of the day.

Pacing Pratt Institute in its victory was Max Wang, as he tied for the match-high of five kills (5-0-9, .556) while leading all players with eight service aces and seven digs. Griffin Benkovszky tied Wang with five kills, while compiled five digs and four service aces. Brooks Reid contributed four kills, and Nathan Kim recorded four kills while leading all players with 12 assists. Finally, it was Matthew Zhang putting forth a strong effort, finishing with 11 assists and six service aces.

Trailing 8-3 in the opening set, Medgar Evers scored consecutive points (courtesy of a Benkovszky service error and a service ace by Toure) to inch to within three (8-5), but Pratt Institute notched 17 of the final 19 points to capture the opener, 25-7. Arturo registered four service aces during that aforementioned push for the Cannoneers, while Wang recorded three kills.

After earning an attack percentage of .500 (7-2-10) in the opening set, Pratt was just as efficient in set number two, notching 11 kills on 18 swats, committing just two errors to hit .500 in the second and win it, 25-10. Benkovszky recorded three kills for Pratt in set number two, while Kim and Mohit Kariea added two apiece. Zhang notched four service aces, while Benkovszky registered three, and Wang added two.

The lone highlight for the Cougars in set two came in the latter stages, when, with Medgar Evers trailing 24-7, the visitors rattled off four consecutive points, with two coming courtesy of Fleming service aces.

Medgar Evers trailed 11-6 in the third set, before scoring consecutive points on a Benkovszky service error, and a service ace by Reid. That brought the Cougars to within three (11-8). Pratt responded by scoring four straight, with the latter three coming courtesy of two Nicco Prada service aces, and a kill by Wang. For the remainder of the set, Medgar Evers would fail to record two straight points, as Pratt went on to capture it, 25-15, and in essence, win the match, 3-0.

The Cannoneers hit .300 for the afternoon (26-11-50) while compiling 26 service aces, 24 assists, and 16 digs. On the flip side, Medgar Evers hit -.296 (1-9-27), recording five service aces and nine digs.
