Medgar Evers silenced by John Jay College in straight sets Tuesday evening in CUNYAC competition

The Cougars' men's volleyball team suffered a three-set defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to CUNYAC foe John Jay College by scores of 5-25, 3-25, and 2-25. The match took place at the Doghouse in New York, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-11 on the 2026 campaign (0-4 CUNYAC), while John Jay improved to 10-6 (4-2 CUNYAC).

The Cougars recorded just one kill and one service ace apiece in the defeat, both courtesy of veteran Nkosi Fraser. He also added two digs on the evening, as well. Kawynzi Dalso notched two digs, and Shabbir Ahmed and Christian Owolabi each recorded a block assist.

For the Bloodhounds in their victory, Jayden Ferril paced his squad with a match-high seven kills while Steven Ajazi, Adam Bainey, and Adria Galve each added five. Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo posted a match-high four service aces while adding 13 assists, and Maxwell Law led all players on the evening with 16 assists.

The Bloodhounds opened the match by rattling off seven consecutive points, including an ace from Attila Nerette. The Cougars momentarily halted John Jay's early momentum with two consecutive points of their own, courtesy of a Nerette service error, and a service ace by Fraser. Later in the first set, Fraser added a kill to inch Medgar Evers to within seven (10-3), but a 15-2 run by John Jay secured set number one. During that aforementioned spurt for the hosts, Galve contributed five kills, while Joshua Acevedo had three.

John Jay raced out to a 6-1 lead in the second set with Roman and Sebastian Rodriguez each recording a pair of kills during that charge. Roman registered three service aces as John Jay bumped its commanding set edge to 13-2. After Roman committed a service error, the Bloodhounds notched 12 straight points to take the set, 25-3. Jayden Ferril and Ajazi produced three kills each during that late-set run for the Bloodhounds, with Rodriguez adding a pair of service aces.

The Bloodhounds opened up the third and final set on a 13-0 run, as Gonzalez Verdejo produced four service aces, and Quez Martin and Fuentes added two kills apiece. John Jay concluded the match on a 10-0 run, as Ferril added three more kills during that spurt to finish off the Cougars.

John Jay College earned a hitting percentage of .576 (39-5-59), registering 34 assists, 17 service aces, and 21 digs.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the York College Gymnasium to tussle with the Cardinals in another CUNYAC confrontation. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
