Cougars stymied by Cardinals in straight sets; Freshman Christian Owolabi shines despite defeat

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match last night, falling to the Cardinals of York College in straight sets, by scores of 10-25, 16-25, and 17-25. The conference clash took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-12 on the 2026 campaign (0-5 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals bumped their record to 2-12 (1-5 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, freshman Christian Owolabi paced the Cougars with team-highs of six kills (6-3-14, .214) four digs, and a solo block. Chrisnel Nicolas added two kills and a team-high two service aces, and veteran Nkosi Fraser's five assists led all Cougars. Fraser also contributed three digs, as well.

Alexis Ramirez put forth a dominant effort for the hosts, leading all players with 14 kills on the evening (14-6-32, .250) to go along with six digs and a pair of service aces. Bryan Godette added nine kills, match-highs of four service aces and eight digs, as well as two assists, and Keron Antoine contributed four kills on the night. Setter Brian Kim's 26 assists was a match-high, and George Molina (two kills, three service aces) and Shady Kalil (three service aces) played key roles in York College's victory, as well.

Trailing 13-4 in the opening set, the Cougars rattled off four out of five points to inch to within six (14-8). That aforementioned run featured four Cardinal attack errors, including two apiece by Godette and Alexis Ramirez. York College then stabilized things, notching 11 of the next 13 points to capture the set, 25-10. During that push for the Cardinals, Ramirez registered three kills while Antoine added two, and George Molina recorded three service aces.

In set number two, Medgar Evers raced out to a 3-1 advantage (highlighted by a service ace by Nicolas) before York responded by scoring five of the next six points to catapult ahead by a score of 6-4. The conference foes continued to trade advantages until York broke open a 12–all tie with a ferocious 10–2 run. During that aforementioned span, Godette registered four aces in a five-point serving run to put York in full control.

Later, with York owning a 22-15 advantage, the Cardinals notched three of the final four points, with Ramirez slamming home a pair of kills, as York won set two, 25-16.

The third set saw the Cougars and Cardinals deadlocked at four apiece, before York put together a 4-1 spurt that featured a kill apiece by Ramirez and Godette. The Cardinals led 8-5 at that juncture, and later led 13-9 before stringing together six consecutive points to take a commanding 19-9 advantage. During that run, Jesus Gomez recorded a pair of service aces, with Antoine adding a kill.

Later, York led the set 21-11, before the Cougars put together a 6-3 run (courtesy of a Nicolas service ace and five Cardinals errors) to inch to within seven (24-17). The Cardinals when closed out the set and the match when Ramirez notched a kill to end it.

For the evening, York College earned a hitting percentage of .239 (30-14-67), while the Cougars hit in the negative (9-15-47, -.128). The Cardinals also held advantages in assists (26-8), service aces (17-3), and digs (20-16).

Medgar Evers will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Cougars will host the Lightning of Lehman College in a non-conference match. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 6:30pm.
