Cougars overwhelmed by Lightning as Lehman earns sweep; Jahiem Johnson notches team-high three kills despite defeat

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team returned to its home court on Thursday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College in straight sets, by scores of 11-25, 9-25, and 5-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-13 on the 2025 campaign, while the Lightning leveled its record at 9-9.
 
Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jahiem Johnson paced the home team with a team-best three kills to go along with two digs. Freshman Christian Owolabi added two kills while tying for the match-high of four digs and a service ace, and veteran Nkosi Fraser contributed two digs, a service ace, and an assist.
 
Jordan Johnson led the way for Lehman College, as he notched a match-high six kills (6-0-11, .545) to go along with a service ace and a dig. Alain Abreu Esteva and Abdoylaye Kante registered four kills apiece, with Esteva recording seven service aces and three digs, and Kante contributing six service aces and three digs. Nathaniel Mattie's 18 assists and nine service aces were both match-highs, and the youngster also contributed two kills. Finally, it was Delano Moulton registering three kills, six service aces, four digs, and a pair of assists.
 
Medgar Evers trailed 10-4 in the opening set, before notching three of the next four points to inch to within four (11-7). That aforementioned run by the Cougars featured a pair of attack errors by Esteva, and a service ace by Owolabi. The Lightning then turned up the voltage, finishing the set with a 14-4 run that featured seven service aces (three by Moulton, two by Matthie, and two by Esteva) and five kills (two by Johnson, two by Moulton, and one by Oscar Calderon) to win it, 25-11.
 
The Lightning raced out to a 7-1 advantage in the second set, as Matthie and Esteva notched two service aces apiece. Later, with Lehman owning a 9-3 edge, Kante put together an impressive run at the service line, notching four consecutive aces to bump the Lightning's lead to 10, 13-3. Lehman used a healthy combination of kills (four, including two by Johnson) and service aces (two piece by Moulton and Esteva) down the stretch to capture set two, 25-9.
 
Lehman College dominated the third set from the jump, putting together its best hitting percentage of the night (8-1-12, .583) while tacking on nine more aces (including four by Matthie) to win the set, 25-5, clinching a sweep of its CUNY foe.
 
The Lightning hit .400 for the evening (24-6-45), compiling a whopping 30 service aces while notching 23 assists and 15 digs. The Cougars registered five kills (three by Johnson, two by Owolabi), and finished the night with two service aces, three assists, and 13 digs.
 
Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will play the Brooklyn College Bulldogs in a home doubleheader. The 6:30pm tussle will service as the CUNYAC contest, with the 8:00pm match being a non-conference affair.
