The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference matchup to SUNY Old Westbury on Tuesday evening, falling to the Panthers in straight sets, 6-25, 7-25, and 8-25, at the Clark Athletic Center in Old Westbury, NY.
With the loss, Medgar Evers falls to 0-7 overall on the season. Old Westbury improves to 2-2.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, while the Cougars were unable to generate enough offensive momentum to close the gap. Old Westbury went on to take the first set, 25-6. SUNY Old Westbury captured set two, 25-7. In the third set, Medgar Evers held an early 2-1 advantage, and trailed just 10-6, however, a 15-2 run by the hosts clinched the match victory for the Panthers.
Medgar Evers finished the evening with four kills on 30 total attacks. Moutiatou Djibring led the Cougars offensively with two kills, while Shanya Aitcheson and Danajah Lawrence each added one. Lawrence also contributed a team-high seven digs, while Sarah Vallon recorded six digs.
The Cougars also received a pair of service aces, with Raine Williams and Vallon each recording one. Williams added four digs, while Djibring finished with three points, including one kill and one block.
Old Westbury was paced by Kasey Coppola, who recorded nine kills on 11 attacks while hitting .727, and Nicole Zugnoni, who finished with three kills and 13 service aces. As a team, the Panthers registered 26 kills and 32 aces.
The Cougars will look to bounce back next Tuesday when they return to action for their home opener against CUNYAC foe John Jay College. The match will be played at LaGuardia Community College, with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
