Halftime Lead Evaporates as Men's Basketball Loses to Ramapo, 93-84

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- After building up a halftime advantage, the Medgar Evers men's basketball team could not hold on as they dropped a 93-84 decision to Ramapo College Sunday night at the Cougars Cave.

In the loss, Steve Shivers II (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Piney Woods School) played a great all-around game for the Cougars who drop to 2-4 on the season. The junior fell just one assist shy of a triple-double, scoring 16 points along with 10 rebounds and nine assists. Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J./Westtown) netted a team-high 17 points, and Andron Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) tallied eight points, eight caroms and four assists.

Off the bench, senior Aker-Mark Bayley-Hay (Miami, Fla./Flanagan) finished with 10 boards and eight points. while both Josh Manners (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Architecture) and Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) added 10 points apiece.

Thomas Bonacum led five Roadrunners (4-2) in double figures with 22 points and six rebounds. Frank Nock added 18 points and five assists, while Josh Ford chipped in with 15 points and five helpers. Nick Stanek (14) drilled four-for-four triples, while Christopher Moseley (13) sealed the game away with some highlight-reel dunks late in the second half.

In the first half, both teams were evenly matched and played at a very fast pace. The Cougars would build some momentum early, with good passing and efficient shooting. But foul trouble plagued both Lee and Thomas, which sent them to the bench for a considerable amount of time. The team would go into halftime up 46-42.

Ramapo battled back in the second stanza by shooting an impressive 58.8% from the field in the half. They also drilled 8 of 15 shots from three-point range, which put the game out of reach for Medgar Evers.

The Cougars lost despite outscoring the Roadrunners in the paint 44-34, as well as earning the slight edge on the rebounding front at 47-44.

Medgar looks to rebound from the loss with a quick turnaround Monday night, when they host Cairn University at the Cougars Cave. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
