Women's Basketball Drops Tourney Consolation Game to New Rochelle

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The Medgar Evers women's basketball team hung tough throughout, but would eventually fall to the College of New Rochelle, 83-67, in the consolation game of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Tournament at the Cougars Cave Sunday afternoon.

Nia Tompkins (Queens, N.Y./The Young Women's Leadership Academy) led the Lady Cougars (0-6) with a team-high 22 points, drilling seven three pointers in a losing effort. Junior Kimonia Mullings (Queens, N.Y./Flushing) tallied her first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Danyelle Foster (Brooklyn, Newtown) added 18 points and grabbed seven boards. For her performance, Foster was named to the All-Tournament team.

For the Blue Angels (3-6), All-Tournament team member Jasmine Brandon posted a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds to take third place. Hannah Cambel connected on six triples and finished with a game-best 24 points, while Amirror Dixon added 14 points. JaNasha King dished off seven assists to go with nine points.

New Rochelle excelled on the offensive end all game, shooting an impressive 53.2% including 57.1% (12-for-21) from beyond the arc. The Lady Cougars turned the ball over 17 times, which led to 28 Blue Angel points.

The rest of the All-Tournament Team was Elia Salazar from Eastern Nazarene, Alexa Menard from Trinity College, and the Most Valuable Player was Mackenzie Griffin from the tournament champion Trinity who topped Eastern Nazarene 51-45 in the title game.

Up next for Medgar Evers is a home matchup against Albertus Magnus on Tuesday night. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
