BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers men's basketball team is looking for their fourth win in five games and is looking to climb the conference standings when they face off with perennial CUNYAC title contenders the College of Staten Island Friday night at the Cougars.
With a win against the Dolphins, the Cougars (7-8, 4-3 CUNYAC) would draw even with the Dolphins for third in the conference. Currently, the team is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the CUNYAC with CCNY and Baruch.
The Cougars are coming off an 89-73 win over conference foe John Jay College Wednesday night at the Doghouse.
Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) paced four players in double figures with a team-high 30 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. This was the guard's ninth game this season with 30-plus points and also connected 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. FreshmanÂ
Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continues his strong start with the team, contributing 17 points and nine boards in the victory.
The one-time CUNYAC Player of the Week Lee leads the conference and ranks second in NCAA Division-III with 29.9 points per game and tied for fourth in D-III with 105 free throws made. In just four games with the team, Sutton is averaging 13.0 points per game and is shooting a blistering 10-for-16 from the three-point range.Â
Maurice Swaby IIÂ (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is third on the team with 11.5 points per game.
Medgar Evers faces a tough task going against Staten Island (11-4, 5-2 CUNYAC), who is coming into the game on a three-game winning streak. Their last matchup was a sound defeat of York (N.Y.) Wednesday night, 74-55.
CSI is led by All-American senior Will Fonseca, who is second in the CUNYAC and in the top-25 in NCAA Division-III with 22.6 points per game. Last season's ECAC Metro Co-Player of the Year also leads the team with 8.8 rebounds per game (fourth in conference). One-time CUNYAC Player of the Week and Preseason All-American Frank Schettino is second on the team with 13.3 points and ranks second with 5.0 assists per contest.
Both teams lead high-powered offense with Medgar Evers scoring 82.3 points per game (second in CUNYAC), while Staten Island averages 79.4 points per contest which ranks fifth. The Cougars will have to contend with the best shooting team in the conference, as Staten Island shoots a phenomenal 47.5% as a team this season as well as a conference-best 39.1% from three-point range.
