Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Trailing late, the Medgar Evers men's basketball team turned to their defense and foul shooting as they edged CCNY for their sixth-straight victory on Senior Night, 69-68, in their regular season finale Tuesday night at the Cougars Cave.
With their season-best sixth consecutive win, the Cougars (13-12, 10-6 CUNYAC) finish as the number-four seed heading into the 2016 CUNYAC Basketball Championships later this week.
Prior to the game, seven seniors were celebrated and honored by Medgar Evers head coach
Chris Pursoo.
Pablo Segura (Flushing, N.Y.)
, Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.),
Aker-Mark Bayley-Hay (Miami, Fla.),
Zavier Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.),
Desmar Gomes (Georgetown, Guyana),
Josh Manners (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and
Simuel Stevenson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were all honored with commemorative plaques and Lee also received a basketball to honor his 50-point performance last month.
The team was paced by freshman center
Andron Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who led five players in double figures in the win by tallying 13 points and 15 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Coston added 12 points and seven rebounds, while
Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each added 11 points off the bench.
Lee totaled just 10 points along with four rebounds and three assists despite being double and triple-teamed throughout the contest, but scored seven crucial points in the last four minutes of play.
Mark Richards topped all scorers with 23 points and seven rebounds for the Beavers (13-12, 7-9 CUNYAC) in a losing effort. Khalil Hamer flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, seven boards and seven assists while Blake Borysewicz added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The first half saw both teams struggle with their shot, as both shot under 35% from the field as the Cougars took a 29-24 lead into intermission. In the second, Medgar Evers would increase their advantage to eight points but a quick 9-0 Beaver run in less than two minutes saw CCNY move ahead. They would take a nine-point lead with six minutes left, but three point plays from Lee and
Markus Kearney Jr. (Brooklyn, N.Y.) helped the Cougars get back in it.
After Thomas split free throws to cut the deficit to 68-67, a defensive stop led to Sutton drawing a foul with 10.5 seconds left, and hit both free throws to move ahead by one point. Hamer's last-ditch layup fell short as the clock expired to give Medgar Evers the victory.
