The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team played a nonconference road game against the University of St. Joseph at the O'Connell Center in West Hartford, CT, on Sunday, November 11.
The Cougars (0-2) fell to the Blue Jays (2-0), led by former University of Connecticut Head Coach Jim Calhoun, by a score of 95-82.
In his second-career collegiate game, Freshman
Elias Scott led MEC with 21 points, hitting five of his eight three-point attempts and seven of 11 field goal tries. Senior
Justin Sutton added 20, while junior
Jafet Thomas dropped 16 and grabbed five rebounds, including four off the offensive glass.
Sean Webb and
Isaiah Garvey-Mwazi each contributed nine points, while
Sidney Payne posted a team-high-tying five boards in only 10 minutes of play.
Sutton's 20 points gives him 937 for his collegiate career, putting him only 63 short of the 1,000-point barrier. The Brooklyn, NY, native is on track to break the record during the Cougars' next home game, which will take place Wednesday, November 28 at 7:00 pm against the University of Valley Forge.
Medgar Evers next retakes the court for the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Connecticut College in New London, CT, on Saturday and Sunday, November 17-18. The Cougars will face the United States Coast Guard Academy on November 17 at 8:00 pm, followed by a game against the host team on November 18 at 2:00 pm.
