Women's Basketball Falls to Simmons

Whyte Named to All-Tournament Team As Cougars Look To Bounce Back in Conference Opener against @

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team faced Simmons University on Sunday, November 25, at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY.

The Cougars (0-6) fell to the Sharks (1-5) by a final score of 102-44. The matchup was the consolation match of the 20th Annual Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial tournament, hosted by Medgar Evers on Saturday and Sunday, November 24 and 25.

Old Westbury defeated Lasell College in the championship game to take home the title.

Cyndi Whyte led the Cougars with 13 points on six-of-13 shooting and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Destiny Simmons added 11 points and three assists while Janaisha Carrington dished out six assists.

Freshmen Khalia Sprattley and Czarina Velazquez each contributed a team-best five rebounds.

The Sharks scored 63 points in the first half and MEC was unable to keep up with Simmons' explosive offense, which yielded two players (Cassandra Staplefeld and Francesca Corsinetti) with over 30 points and who made seven three pointers apiece.

The Cougars return to action on Friday, November 30, for a home contest against Hunter College at 6:00 pm at the Cougars Cave. The game marks the start of Medgar Evers' CUNYAC play in the 2018-19 season.
