The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team defeated Hunter College on Friday, November 30, at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY.
The Cougars (2-4) beat the Hawks (2-4) by a score of 69-41. Hunter beat Medgar Evers in both of their meetings last season.
MEC started out scorching hot, jumping out to a 14-2 lead after freshman
Elias Scott's second three-pointer of the game. The Cougars'Â stingy defense held Hunter to just 5-29 from the floor in the first half as MEC led 39-15 at the break.
Scott picked up right where he left off after the intermission, nailing three triples in a row out of the gate to put the black-and-gold up 48-17. The Cougar lead was as high as 35 points when they led 54-19 with 14 minutes remaining, and they held off any Hunter rally thereafter.
Scott finished with a career-high 31 points in only his sixth collegiate game, finishing 12-17 from the floor and sinking six-of-seven from beyond the arc and adding two assists.
"I really just wanted to get my teammates involved, and I was scoring the ball when I wanted to score the ball," said Scott after the game. "Honestly, I just wanted to get the win because we needed to get a conference win, especially in the first game."
Jafet Thomas posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, and added five blocks, while
Justin Sutton contributed nine points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Cougars return to action on Sunday, December 2, when they take on Alfred State College at 4 pm at the Cougars Cave.
